| [Speeds] Are the upgrade wars back
It looks as if several of the major US cable providers are raising the speed limit again. I'm wondering if this is going to only be region specific or system wide for these companies. I've not had time to read all the recent articles. But it seems OOL speeds or above will be offered by some cable providers. OOL has yet to step up to the plate with an answer to Verizon FIOS. You'd think they would try to combat things before the need for a band-aid comes about.
I'm just thinking out loud. From what I see no Insight competitors are releasing anything new. So I'd say that Insight speeds will continue to stay as they are. Just figured it might be interesting to point out what others are doing.

| reply to MSauk In my opinion I honestly don't feel there is full competition. An example of a competitor in my region is SBC. In my mind this isn't true competition since SBC doesn't provide broadband services to residential customers citywide. With that said. Insight will tell you this is a competitor. It also is business 101. That companies only bring about change to counter act or beat the competition to the punch. At least in most all cases. There are exceptions to this rule.
I wasn't really wanting to start an Insight bashing thread. It seemed to me we could have an interesting conversation without going that route. Looks as if I was wrong. -- Test Your Security Cable Diagnostics Iggyz Blog ZoneAlarm Help |

| reply to IGGY Alltel is currently offering 3000 kbps downstream for $34.95 per month in my area. I can't comment on the upload speeds as they (as most companies) only find it necessary to talk about their download speeds. Either way, this package is comparable to Insight's and would be sufficient for the majority of users. However, there is one external problem holding Alltel back in the struggle with their cable competitiors.
Any Insight subscriber that utilizes the television portion of their service is likely familiar with the "What's your insight?" tagline that is repeated 1000 times per day throughout your viewing sessions. I've come to despise the blond-haired woman more than a baby on an airplane, but that's beside the point. The situation may be different in other areas, but I can't recall ever seeing a commercial for Alltel DSL (or phone, for that matter). Whether this is due to Insight regulating the amount of airtime given to competitive products or simply Alltel's marketing team slacking on the job, a company can't expect to compete unless the available userbase knows they exist. Sure, we are well aware of the availabilities in our area; but Average Joe, the financial workhorse, only knows what he sees.
With some exceptions that most users will not notice or care about, most of Insight's "competitors" are technically equal. However, until they start marketing themselves and drawing a larger share of the pie, there is no incentive for Insight to raise the bar anymore than they already have. -- Team Helix |

| reply to IGGY Why should anybody be afraid of FIOS? nobody except the ultra 31337 techies seem to really know about it, and its availability is limited. yeah, it's fast, but dial-up is still selling in massive quantities, isn't it? It's hard to "offer a solution" to something that is around 10x faster than cable. You can't just do a simple speed upgrade to fix it.
oh, and I think the Insight chick is hawt. it's one of the few ad campaigns that is worth looking at, not okie-dokie, and not something from Terry Miniers or Bob Sacola. |

| Insight is not afraid of sbc in the springfield and decatur markets due to the fact that sbc is cuting back on there dsl service they went from 18000 feet to 8000 feet hell in forsyth they put in a new remote terminal box and then scraped it for there new PROJECT LIGHT SPEED. Mark my word they will be redlining this small towns so they can get there fiber out quick. Hell insight will soon by there oc's from sbc and rumer has it after the merger with att that the sbc name will no longer be used. Atleast insight here in decatur is putting a new oc48 in. They have to if they want to offer phone service. |

| What are you talkin! DSL is now $15 per month! From SBC. That tells you what it's worth doesn't it? SBC's only hope is to keep enough customers until it gets it 'fiber to the curb' deployed and can compete with cable. It's a long shot but I wouldn't count SBC out of competition. They have a lot of $$$ |

| Yeah it tells me it is shit period. And do you think sbc will be rolling out there fiber aka project lightspeed anytime soon in springfield or decatur? No they will redline it to get to the most customers we may see it in 2010 if we are lucky. There dsl here is horrible had it for my business and could only get 384/128 out of it when they said it will do 1.5/128 thats to damn slow period. |
