Have any of you tried VOIP using headset and laptop in Hotspot?

I tried this in Miami and it was fair. The hotspot was, I believe, trough Sprint. I am not sure what the connectivity was however I can tell you the internet speed was pretty poor. In this situation I could hold a conversation however I don't think I would just sit and talk socially. I have heard of much better experiences from others however.

I have used Broadvoice and VoicePulse using my laptop and a USB headset. Worked great. Granted I was the only one at the Starbucks at that time and wasn't competing for bandwith with others.

I've used it, but the quality was pretty sketchy. Not really worth the time to set up and use. I think I'd rather just use a cell phone.

you don't need the VOIP adapter if you are just using headset, right?

No, I was using the X-Pro softphone and a USB headset

I'm wondering if X-lite will work with Sunrocket. I've done it with Packet 8 but not Sunrocket yet. I suppose that Packet 8 is probably better for VOIP hotspot because of its lower bandwidth requirments

No, Sunrocket validates you via MAC address of your Gizmo,

Some hotspots block SIP ports- it's hit and miss.

Hmm, well maybe they will get it in the future.

x-tunnels and a vpn slide around most of the port blocking techniques.

I used my notebook and did VOIP at various airport hotspots and it worked pretty good.

Before the "VoIP Craze" I used a Softphone at a busy Starbucks using the microphone and speakers of my IBM ThinkPad... it worked, and that's about it.

I see no reason to use a HotSpot for VoIP access -- I have a cell phone if I want to talk on the phone away from my home.

When you accessed P8 from a hotspot, did you do so via X-Lite (i.e. a SoftPhone) or did you actually have your P8 DTA w/ you? If you accessed it from a SoftPhone, please provide more details on how you accomplished that. Thanks.

It was possible a while back to use Packet8 to make/recieve calls with Asterisk and probably softphones.

Then they added a few more security measures, it might still be possible, but all the easy hacks will no longer allow you to use the service with any off-the-shelf SIP device.

I've only used X-lite with packet 8 from landline. I haven't tried it with hotspot.

Sorry, I never had Packet 8 working with X-lite. It was FWD I had working with Packet 8 where I could call back and forth. I don't believe that works anymore with them.

P8/FWD peering was fixed about a month or so ago. I was already familiar w/ using FWD to call P8 numbers; however, I was hoping for a true P8 softphone solution. Oh well.

Inside my own country absolutely. Internationally, is a different story. My wife had an 8 hour layover in Tokyo and it came in real handy, particulary since her mobile was not UMTs compatible.

I just got a notebook pc and am trying it with packet 8 using the adapter plugged in to LAN on notebook. I'm guessing that I have to share my wireless conection with my LAN connection to get it to work but my LAN shows as disconnected and wireless is working fine. Anyone have any tips for this?

The reason I'm using the adapter is some providers don't allow usage over softphone.

1) Use a crossover cable to connect your P8 DTA directly to your notebook's ethernet port.

2) Turn on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on your Wireless Network Interface.

Note: ICS enables a DHCP server on your notebook, where the DHCP server uses the internal IP address of 192.168.0.1. It DHCP assigns IP addresses using the scheme 192.168.0.x (where x > 1). If your wireless connection is hooked up to a router using the same 192.168.0.x addressing scheme, you'll need to change your router to another addressing scheme (i.e. 192.168.1.x).

3) After step 2 has been successfully completed, your DTA should receive a DHCP assigned IP address from your notebook and be able to share your notebook's wireless network connection (i.e. you should have a dialtone at this point).
