I like the weather one...and the yellow pages one is helpful, too.
Just last night, I installed the traffic one on my wife's profile. Now, when I'm leaving work, I can call her and find out if I should brace myself for delays.
I like the idea of widgets. I'm just waiting for some cooler ones to come out. -- "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." - Kitty Farmer |

| reply to LBadvance I'm indifferent about them... I can't really figure out when I'm supposed to use them though, since once you have Dashboard open you can't use any other windows. Or else I just haven't figured it out yet. -- Diary of a Switcher |

| reply to LBadvance have yet to upgrade and for the first time, I'm not in a real hurry since to be able to use all the features of tiger, one needs a $2,000 machine. the widgets to me are what IE is to windows. I find this system wide stuff somewhat disturbing and would feel safer with Konfab's widgets and at the moment I have none. -- The fascination of shooting as a sport depends almost wholly on whether you are at the right or wrong end of the gun.P. | After much of the hype settled down, I tried a bunch of widgets out, and realized they werent really all too useful. Info is limited and they consume memory & processing power.
On a side note, is there a way of getting the Dashboard not to load? It loads even if there are no widgets displayed. -- }·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´ |

| reply to LBadvance Hey, I just noticed that in 10.4.1 you can use SnapZ Pro to do the screen capture. I don't think this worked before - we had to use timed capture with Grab.
Try using one of the screen corners (Exposé corners) to trigger Dashboard. It works a lot smoother for me than using F12. Depends on whether you are 90% mouse or 90% keyboard. I have the right lower corner set for Dashboard, and I can just sling the mouse there, check something, and click through to get out of Dashboard. |

| reply to LBadvance I think widgets are useful when it reads info from programs. I esp. like the widget that reads the To-Do and ical and also the the one that reads the events from ical. Unfortunately the later one only read events within the next 24 hrs. I emailed the author if he could extend it to a week.

| reply to LBadvance I feel the same way about Dashboard Widgets in Tiger as I did about the Dock magnification feature when Mac OS X first came out. Nice eye candy, but mostly useless and time-wasting.
I much prefer menubar widgets (since my menubar is always visible) and web pages (since I am working in a web browser 99% of the time) to provide the peripheral sort of information that Dashboard provides. -- dimaging gallery | blog |

| reply to LBadvance When I saw Tiger at MWSF I saw this coming...unless the developers get behind this and start cranking out some really useful stuff, I fear that widgets will become a seldom used feature in Tiger for most folks.
That being said, the widgets that I use the most (which is maybe once a day) is to view the different world clocks so I know when I can talk to friends in different places around the world. The weather is nice to see once in awhile, but I hardly have any widgets up at all. -- "Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. | reply to LBadvance I hardly have any open, just the weather one and the calculator.
If they didn't take up so much virtual memory I might reconsider. I was at the Apple Yorkdale store on Saturday and they had maybe 8-10 widgets open. VM usage was almost 10GB. That's pretty unacceptable to me. |

1 edit | reply to prwood said by prwood :I feel the same way about Dashboard Widgets in Tiger as I did about the Dock magnification feature when Mac OS X first came out. Nice eye candy, but mostly useless and time-wasting. Ironically, I bet two things do more to sell Macs than anything else. Someone at work wanted me to show him Tiger/OS X, so I loaded up a bunch of widgets and turned on dock magnification, he loved it. Of course I explained neither of these do much for your productivity, but he was impressed nonetheless. Then I showed him Exposé and explained how it really does do a lot for productivity, he was hooked on that too.
I personally find dock magnification annoying, because it turns my dock icons into moving targets when I'm trying to click on one. But it's always one of the first things I turn on when I'm "showing off". |
