For the simpler job of cleaning the last files and folders of programs deleted using the M$ delete program function I use ZTREE Win, an oldie but a goodie (it's the XP spin off from XTREE Gold -if you've been around long enought to remeber it from DOS days). Lets you burrow right down into the drives and delete and move anything you want.
Its search function is very good when trying to find random bits of old software.
Especially when the software you thought you got rid of has dumped nasties in other file directories or used fancy names to hide in out of the way places. |

Be sure to let TU save a backup when asked, just to be on the safe side. I have a feeling it's going to find a lot. |

You might want to try a program like TuneUp Utilities to see what remnants of Mcaffee it can remove. It has a free 30 day trial. |

These remnants of the McAfee firewall may also be causing conflicts with ZA.
You will need to check in your registry for McAfee entries.

I did a search "McAfee" on my comp, and it brought up lots...mostly internet sites, but a few folders. I have 3 folders, one containing the online free virus scan from McAfee. Another folder has the personal firewall stuff inside, but only 3 main components:
Archive folder
Data folder
Error logfile
This folder shows up in my Program files directory.
Another folder shows up named "McAfee.com Personal Firewall", is located in my Documents and Settings folder under Application Data. It has a few 1kb settings files.
There are a few more things regarding McAfee too. I wonder if all this is a problem, yet I'm unsure if I should delete them. Nothing shows up to uninstall in add/remove programs. |

From your post above, there is nothing in your Hosts file.
It wouldn't surprise me if you still had remnants of McAfee on your computer, which is causing conflicts with Avast.
Uninstalling some of these AVs completely is near impossible, NAV being a prime example.

i want to check my hosts file, like mentioned in that FAQ's, since I wonder if thats the problem. But that zip file for the program to view the hosts file doesn't download for me right. When I try to open it, it won't let me saying the file is corrupt or invalid. |

Try disabling your free security programs, one by one, and see if the problem goes away. Start with Zone Alarm, it's the most likely culprit. Make sure to re-enable them afterward of course.
Also, run some on-line scans as listed in the FAQ: »Security »I think my computer is infected or hijacked. What should I do? just in case you are infected with something that's causing the symptoms.

3 edits | I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the security programs I have downloaded on my computer, but I think it might.
My problem is for one, my internet speed is slower lately. When I click just about any website, it usually doesn't go directly to the website, but hangs just a bit when I click a link before going there. This could just be a speed problem with my ISP, as speedtests fluctuate quite a bit each time I run them (even within seconds of eachother).
Plus, on forums or things.....when people post pictures in their posts, I can't see probably 75% of them. Most come up with red x's.
Final (and main and most constant) problem I've noticed is that sometimes I have to click links 2 or 3 times in order to finally get the page to load. On the first try I am getting more and more "page cannot be loaded" popups from Firefox. Each page will usually eventually load, but again....many are requiring me to hit the link at least 2-3 times. I don't recall having this problem in the past.
I can't remember when this started, but I recently ran out of my free 1 year McAfee subscription. So when it ran out, I deleted it in favor of free stuff. I downloaded and am using Avast antivirus, with all the scanners turned on, and Zone Alarm free edition, with windows firewall turned off and my internet security and trusted zone settings at medium.
Any idea whats going on here? I am behind a router, but didn't have this problem when I was using McAfee and noticed it pop up sometime after installing these free security programs. Just not sure if there is something else to blame in my system.
Just some extra tidbits:
I'm using Firefox 1.0.3, but when I use IE the problems stay the same, so that can't be it.
I've tried disabling both Avast and ZA from running and then going to the websites (or a forum) and seeing if the same pictures actually load, and they still don't. I still get a majority of red x's.
