This isn't breaking news.

It's not surprising me that DSL is on the rise. Cable has some unattractive traits that turn some users off: caps, shared bandwidth/over-crowed nodes, crappy tech support (non yet from Cox).

Re: This isn't breaking news.

verizon has been sharing bandwidth in there DSL. So, many slow downs on the east coast.

Verizon PPPoE is different. I never did liked it or considered it ADSL.

I am apparently fortunate. I have not seen any slowdowns or packet loss on my verison DSL line.

Sharing bandwidth is different with DSL and cable. Obviously all ISP's share bandwidth - they aren't going to have a dedicated 3.0Mbps pipe for you or me. However DSL gives you full bandwidth between you and the ISP (point-to-point), whereas cable you also share bandwidth to the ISP's node.

No caps or useage resctriction on road runner in ohio. Not over crowded ither . Crappy tech support? Well name one isp with good tech support aand ill call you a lair. Ask them a question not in their script and they will stumble. Ive yet to find a large name is with support staff that knows what they are doing though some seem to this is simply because they have better scripts.

Now in most cases ive found that my isps (road runner) tech support does resolve most isues. Their biggest problem is thinking they know every thing. I had crappy cable service all around. I knew what the problem realy was it was the line from pole to house. It was nearly 18 years old yet the refused to replace this line. 4 replacement modems later one of the installers accualy cut the line and said it was a problem with the line it self having snapped heh. After he did that and was cleared to replace the line ive had no problems at all sence then. They cost them self a few bucks on that one less than they made from me over the years of course. Cable isps especially need to start listeing when their customers say hey look i know wha the problem is just come out here and replace this old worn out line and be done with it.

Realy thats the only problem cable has. My road runner runs 45 a month if you have cable tv i get upwards of 5200kb download on it. dial up account and secound phone line runs 40+ for alot less. Dsl is slower than cable most of the time less you realy lucky and have access to a dsl provider offering 6 megs a secound. Dsl has contracts that will nail you if you cancle for what ever reason most of the time. Then theres the limits on distance from telco that will keep the majority from getting dsl.

Dsl is getting better and better. I would much rather have it over cable anyday.

Please use the spell check option, and just a little grammar. This would make it easier to read your post.

I'll name one ISP with truly stellar tech support:

Speakeasy

Too bad the rest of the place smokes bananas.

Provided you have the option for DSL. Most Comcast subscribers only have 1 choice for broadband. Until the other TELCO's get on the stick and install more CO's in those markets of Comcast, Comcast will always have the upper hand.

With the excellent service and reliability that Comcast have given me over the years they deserve two upper hands.
I had qwest dsl 2 years ago before comcast built out to my new home. qwest never approached 50% of claimed speeds.

I think Qwest is probably the worst DSL value anyways. In my area, their 1.5/1 service cost nearly as much as CC standard 4 megabit service. And for those that qualify for higher speeds with Qwest, they charge another 10 dollars. Thus they blew an opportunity to rapidly gain some market share by remaining non competitive price wise.

CC policy to charge a penalty for HSI to those who cancell CC TV services has always been a sore spot for me. I wonder just how many TV customers they retain by doing that? Or if they lose more to satelite and DSL because of the predatory price policy. I think that policy probably helps DSL more then anything does. But it also keeps some people locked into a crummy overpriced tv service. In the end, I am left with compromise either way I go. Currently I sub to Dish and use CC HSI with the bare basic CC TV which saves me a couple of bucks off the predatory HSI pricing. That has always upset me and if Qwest would only provide me with a competing DSL package I would luv to dump all my comcast once and for all.

Re: This isn't breaking news.

How is CC any more predatory than a DSL provider? If you don't take the landline phone, the bells charge you more for their DSL. CC HSI barebones for $10/more and getting almost 3 times the DSL download speed seems fair to me. And that $10 is cheaper than taking their basic cable.
Comcast's cable package here saves me money over Dish & Directv(I have 8 tv's) with no service problems ever.
With the claim that Qwest is the worst DSL value anyway, how could they ever offer a competitive package?
