Microsoft offers security service

from
»news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4544547.stm
"..
Microsoft is starting an anti-virus and security service for PC users.

The service would be on a yearly subscription basis, just like other anti-virus protection services.

Called Windows OneCare, it is to be tested by the software giant's employees, before a trial release for the rest of the world later this year.

Although Microsoft already offers security features in its software for free, it recently bought anti-virus technology to help beef up security.

"We're designing the service so it will continually update and evolve over time," Ryan Hamlin, Microsoft's general manager of the technology safety group said in a statement.

The service is designed to automatically patch-up security holes, as well as beef up anti-virus and spyware protection. It will also help maintain the health of a user's PC generally, according to Microsoft. ..."

As much as I support MS for trying - I will pass on this.

I think it is a good idea for the masses of people still using AOL dialup that have no desire to manage there security, but I for one would rather maintain my own stuff. And no, I am not a MS basher.

Just wondering when they will be sued for this...

From The Register.

Has anyone pointed out to Microsoft, how OneCare sounds, when spoken with a comedy French accent, Inspector Clouseau-style?

Soon as it goes live probably. People bitch because windows isnt all that secure by default. Then ms comes out with msas and might intergrate it in to future versions of windows. People bitch about that as well. MS cant win no matter what they do.

MS could make windows nt and below open source and people would bitch and say things like what is micro soft hiding? Why didnt htey open source windows 2k and xp? They must have somethign hidden in those oses they dont want people to see like keyloggers trojans etc etc etc. Hell i bet is ms made all ms oses from dos 1 to windows longhorn open source people would say ms wasnt includeing all the code.

A number of the American forum members here will understand it. I have made them aware of this excellent English Slang Dictionary:»www.londonslang.com/ and the one I was guided to yesterday by EGeezer See Profile viz, »www.peevish.co.uk/slang/index.htm

This sounds like it should be on any security conscious user's list.

Automatic patches? Security hole sealing?

More like a premium Windows Update than a security program.

From SecurityFocus by Kelly Martin:

quote:
Since the $2B spyware cottage industry is exclusively a Microsoft problem, I still find it appalling that they would market new software to patch their own product's weaknesses. It seems an awful lot simpler to just fix the problems in IE.

With Microsoft entering the anti-virus market, we now have to ask ourselves basic questions around the issues of trust, honesty and integrity from a company known to have predatory marketing practices, where the fine line of walking along a legal tight rope takes precedent over any ethical or moral higher ground. Can you really trust Microsoft exclusively to protect your computer from security threats? What is their track record thus far in addressing security concerns in a timely manner?
This is an excerpt from broader perspectives discussed.

It is not Microsoft's problem. People like me see the real issue, and it's not spyware or viruses via security holes. The problem is getting other people to see the real issue, the real reason why Windows has virus and spyware problems, and the why and the how it isn't Microsoft's fault.

Not everyone is as computer savvy as me, unfortunately. Therefore, Microsoft must take things into their own hands to protect users from themselves. Laws are also made to protect people from themselves from certain things, because they cannot handle or do not want to share the responsibility.

I get dirty with viruses and spyware and purposely visit malicious URLs, as only some of you know. Read my blog. I run then 1) with the admin account and, 2) with a limited user account (extremely difficult infection rate). I haven't seen one or been across one that automagically installed itself (they just needed the user to click Yes). So if anyone is still going to tell me it's Microsoft's problem, i'd kindly have to shove them off to the side.

MS Antispyware to be discontinued?

I'm afraid of what OneCare may do to MS Antispyware. I wonder if they'll still keep MSA under development if OneCare takes off.... I like my MSA (along with Firefox, AVG, and XP SP2 Firewall) - things stay pretty clean. I'd rather use these excellent free services than play with a (likely) clunky all-in-one tool like OneCare. I've never been a fan of Systemworks (too big of an install for the amount of work it does) and I'm guessing OneCare will be similar.
