| Free POTS 911
What people seem to forget is that Even if you dont have phone service through your local telephone company they are required to provided you with 911 service.
As long as the telephone wire has not been disconnected at the nid to do the trick with pluging your voip addapter into a jack and then that in turns makes all the jacks usable with the voip service then yoou can place a call. That is what the 911 Service fee on pots lines are for. so even people who can not afford telephone service can have emergency 911 calls.
So there is no real excuse. Peole tend to forget thta you have 911 service on a the ptos line even if you dont have telephone service.
If you want to do the whole house trick with you viop fine buut from the nid run another jack form a second set in your nids that is hooked up to the phone companys wireing so you will always have realiable 911
Or carry a damn cellphone. It does not even have to be prepaid or post paid. You can make emergency 911 calls from a formarlly activated phone. ( I say formersly as some phones when they come out of the box new are not programed so the 911 call would not go through. )
So I find it hard to blame vonage for her stupidity. I feel sorry for her lost but not her stupidity. |

Show me how this works. I don't believe it for a second. In order to have 911 service through POTS, you MUST have a dial tone. I would love to be wrong on this. -- Microwave and RF Components at www.ohiomicrowave.com |

When I shut off the service in one of my appartments a few years back, I still had a dial tone, but got an automated recording when I dialed anyone. Id have thought thats how it was everywhere. |

| I understand completely about the cell phones. I keep a spare old, working cell phone in each of my cars, along with a battery charger "just in case". I was responding to someone's statement that you should be able to use a POTS line to dial 911 even if you don't have POTS service. That is just not true. -- Microwave and RF Components at www.ohiomicrowave.com |

| wb6qwf it is true in the state of florida....
you can make emgerency 911 calls if you dont have service with the teleco.
Now Verizon or sprint or bell south is not going to come to your house and hook up the copper pair if you dont have it already. But you can if telephone nid is still connected to the telephone company.
Very Now this appears not to be in all states but is in florida where this woman lives. It is also where I lived and know of people who uses this setup with voip. Where they leaver there jacks and nid hooked up to the teleco to get 911 service. |

| Stonecold, here's a logical situation, then: Suppose you have your POTS disconnected but the NID remains in place, as do all your wires in your house. You use VOIP through your cable company with a wireless phone, so you never touch the jacks in the walls. I understand from your post that if you (in the State of Chads) were to hook an old Bell phone, it would have the capacity to dial 911. That means there is voltage on that line to power the phone and its tone-generating circuit. What if the phone company needed your pair at the neighborhood box for another purpose, such as a new customer? How would you still be hooked up? Are they not allowed to use wire pairs for other purposes once someone is no longer their customer?
Or, when you cancel POTS service, does the phone company automatically remove your NID to cover themselves? -- Microwave and RF Components at www.ohiomicrowave.com |

| Now I cant answer those questions
Here is what I know a friend went from pots to cell only 5 years ago before realible e911 for cells. he stills has that pots for 911. logic would dictate that when verizon would need that pair they would disconnect his pair from the switch.
all i know is that so fair my firned and others have free 911 pots. It is a growning town I was alreasy told it was mandated by law by a verizon tech.
Now my question is that is my friend going to lose his free 911 pots when verizon goes fiber which they are working on in my area. eventually they will take down the old coper and where does that leave him.
But the bottom line is that the woman screw up by trusting a service which was state as well not working well. |
