| i just got DVR from insight...
i wanted to continue this thread/topic »Re: DVR service questions / review but i guess it was too old... so here is a new thread of the same nature...
the tech was just here a few says ago and i now have a Motorola DVR model dct6208/1000... so far.. it sux, sux hardcore... unless i can find a few "work arounds" or fixes i will be calling to cancel this service within the next few days...
issues that have to be fixed asap or insights DVR service will not be worth a plug nickel and i will cancel:
1)if i can not record one show/channel while watching another... then this unit/service is pure junk... why would one want to watch a show and then watch it again later? wow, thats just what the public wants... the ability to watch endless reruns! to me (and i am sure many others as well) the point of a dvr (and the extra cost of the service) is to serve as a family compromise, wife can watch lifetime while i record history channel, i can work late and record a program while my kid watches cartoons in my absence... again, if a dvr cant do that, then it is pretty much useless... true pausing a show while i put the kid to bed or clean up his spilled milk is all good, but that feature alone is not even CLOSE to being worth the extra $, especially when direct tv has the tivo which will do all the things a REAL dvr is meant to do...
2) how do i use the ethernet port? i want to access the dvr hard drive via my pc, or i want to watch programs on my pc via the ethernet port. what is the pourpose of the ethernet port? i have searched and searched, i can not find any documentation or help with the function of the ethernet port on the Motorola dct6208/1000. the manual from the Motorola website is a joke, it tells next to nothing on the how tos and feature uses, etc... and of course insight offers the typical blah blah blah type of usless scripted responses when you call thier "support" numbers and wait on hold for a few days...
i will post more later...got to tend to my 3 year old....
if anybody has a work around or answer to these issues, that would be great! |

| There is a new box int he works that you will be able to use to record one and watch another, the problem is that is was supposed to be out months ago. You can always use a two way splitter so you could have two inputs and record on the dvr while watching something else. As far as the ethernet and USB ports on the box, they are for looks only and serve no purpose at this time, due to copy right laws and infringements (so i am told) |

| Well in "theory" most newer Tv.s have more then one input, IE; video component or an A and B Antenna input, but if yours doesn't then you do not have any choice. But if you have a component input and at least one coax input then you can still watch one thing and record another. If you do then here is what you do, starting from the cable outlet in the room run a wire to the input of an input splitter....then from one leg of the splitter run a jumper to the DVR input, and hook the DVR up to the component input of the Tv (these are the RED,WHITE,and YELLOW connections) then go back to the splitter and run a jumper from the other leg to the coax input (antenna A) on the back of the tv..... All you have to do is tune your DVR to what you want to watch and then change to your antenna A and watch Tv while your DVR is Recording something else |

4 edits | reply to Rodneyb74 For a coaxial-only tv, a splitter before the DVR, and an A/B switch at the tv would let you watch any of the analog (but not digital) channels live while the DVR is recording another channel. Haven't done this myself, so I don't know whether the splitter would degrade the signal.
insight would be doing itself a favor if it would be more up-front with people about the inability to watch one channel while taping another (in the absence of some fancy wiring). As you pointed out, a lot of people want to be able watch one channel while recording another, and insight should not be making customers unhappy.
Fortunately, some of the DVR pioneers (Iggy, in particular) posted long reviews when the DVR first came out, so I knew what to expect before it was installed. I think the DVR is great. It's not too often that I want to watch two programs that are on at the same time. I want to time-shift. And I sometimes watch an already-recorded program while another program is recording. If I start watching a ball game one hour behind real time, I'm usually caught up to real time by the time the game is over.
And the pause and rewind live tv are fantastic.
And the HD is useful. Even though I have a 10-year old tv, I can see Universal HD, which has some good stuff. And what is effectively a 3rd PBS channel. And football is better letterboxed.
It's definitely not a tivo, but it's definitely not "pure junk". If you want a tivo, just give the DVR back to insight and get a tivo. |

Upgraded my service today to HD/DVR with the extra HD pack. All I can say is I just about crapped my pants when I changed to HDNet on my Mitsubishi 62525. Just saying wow sells it short.
What I'm really here to post is that while I had the tech cornered I picked his brain a bit. Here are the questions I asked and their answers (All of these apply strictly to the Bloomington/Normal IL area)...
1) When are the dual-tuner boxes coming?
The tech said within the next 6 months if not sooner. The best bet is to just keep asking when you go in to pay your bill or calling the office periodically.
2) When can we expect more HD programming, most notably WYZZ Fox in HD?
The tech said he had no clue, but didn't see if coming in the next 6 months (which unfortunately means we'll have to do it via OTA HD). |

| reply to Rodneyb74 maybe i will save some loot for a bit and just get a dreambox...
thanx for the replys guys... i can see now what i have to do, at least till insight gets thier act together and gets the real dvr's out to us...
i cant complain about insight too loud though, to me, the internet is far more important than TV, and for the past year or so, insights broadband has been much improved... they upped the speeds and have been pretty solid as far as uptime and performance... when it comes to home/non-business use broadband in the rockford area, you wont find better than insight, hands down... but it IS a lil pricey (which is why for the last 2 years or so i have JUST had broadband only from them, no tv, hell thats around $100 a month for both!!! i aint rich just yet!!!) but as far as tv and especially dvr is concerned, they are not even coming close to competing with Dave, aka DTV, aka Direct TV (if i could just cut down two or three HUGE trees, i could get a clear view of the 119 sat (the southwest sky) and enjoy the leading TV provider here as well... |

This is a real DVR box. It may not be as feature rich as you would like. Or have all the capabilities that you were expecting. But this is a fully functional - easy to use DVR. I'm not saying I'm not looking forward to the new box. But I am saying I didn't have to go spend $100 then pay a monthly fee to use the product. Nope - I got the box for free and pay a monthly usage fee. In my book better than what Tivo offers. This box also is a combo unit - since it also includes HD. This is were the satellite providers screw up. If DISH offered a combo DVR/HD unit for free like Insight. They would have had a new customer late last year. But since they are clueless. They get no new customer.
As was stated above. If you want a Tivo - then buy a Tivo. If you want a Replay TV then get that model. If you looking to do some homebrew then take a look around the forum. A few users have put Myth TV or other options into play.
