[OT] Holding your tongue

Sorry this is off topic, but related to photography. Does this bother anyone else? I spent the weekend at rehersal dinner and wedding for my wife's best friend. I brought my camera to the rehersal dinner so that if their photographer wasn't going, I could at least give them some candids of the party. No photographer there, so myself and the groom's brother-in-law both took a good many shots for the happy couple. My annoyance comes in at the wedding and reception. I did not bring my camera because (a) I had to hold and watch my daughter and (b) I did not want to get in the professional photographer's way. There were several people one in particular who were shooting flash photos during the entire wedding and reception, sometimes right on top of the pro at the reception. She was sitting right in front of me at the ceremony, and it was all I could do to not tell her that she needed to turn that camera off because she was likely ruining the guy who was hired to take pictures shots with that flash going off every couple of seconds. I understand people getting excited about the wedding and all, but the wedding couple is never going to see those pictures most likely, and may have had some missed shots because of their (in my mind) rudeness. I know that people put disposables out at receptions for the guests to use and that is nice, but I guess I just needed to rant a little. Oh and the guy was shooting film too, which makes it worse in my mind if he was having to waste film (EOS 3, Speedlite 550, and "L" glass, but couldn't see which one.)

Yeah, that is pretty rude. You ruin the photographers work, making him miss shots. It's a really bad idea to photograph certain events without permission.

I would not have held my tongue... I would, of course, take the "educational" approach first ("excuse me, but you're probably ruining the pro's pictures with your flash"). If that didn't work, she would experience the crustier/crankier/more caustic side of me.

My daughter arranged in advance with the pro re use of disposable cameras which were only given out during the reception after the ceremony. No cameras allowed during the wedding except the pro and my son with a video camera and no light. She is a kick-ass sort of girl so everybody obeyed.:)

She looked like a snooty old lady, and I was sitting with my mother-in-law and holding my daughter, so I just let it go so as to not start a scene since she didn't whip out the camera until the wedding party had come in. It was amusing though, the old lady next to her apparently couldn't get a good shot of the groom, so the annoying one got her camera too and was taking pics holding them over her head in turn trying to see the LCD screen and shoot. The worst part though was she had a Kodak Easyshare with that stupid fake film advance soundtrack that plays every time you take a picture.:):):)

I would bet that she had other manners that were out of line! You don't even have to know about photography to know that there is a time and place for everything and during a ceremony, unless you're asked, is not it.

Re: [OT] Holding your tongue

At our church flash is not allowed during the ceremony and it is clearly stated on invitations and the program. At one service some guy who thought it didn't apply to him started snapping away. The ministers wife walked down and said "That's a nice camera, could I look at it?" He handed it over and she said, 'Thanks, pick it up after the service', turned around and walked out with it.
