Questions on switching between computers

I am a fairly new subscriber to Insight BB, with what I guess you would call the most basic package with no router/hub/etc. After having no problems for a couple weeks with the connection for my desktop, I tried connecting with my laptop. It asked me to register the laptop, and then asked me to switch from the desktop since only one computer can be connected at once. Then it asked me to restart. I followed the steps and it worked fine.

After an hour, I turned off the laptop and went back to the desktop and tried to surf the web. It let me do so without asking me to switch back. The next morning it still let me use the internet without officially switching. Much later in the day after I hadn't been using the desktop for a while, when I next tried to surf the web (about 15-25 hours after using the laptop), it asked me to re-register the computer. Then it asked to switch the connection from the laptop. Then it asked me to reboot. I did so, but after reboot, it again asked me to register. It did not ask me to switch computers this time, but just told me to reboot. This became an endless cycle.

This morning, about 9 hours later, I booted up the computer and it worked fine with no requests to re-register. So my question is, is there some kind of delay when switching between which computer gets to use the cable connection?

I also got an error for the first time on the desktop later this morning that said something about DHCP error and not being able to renew the IP address. I clicked No, and there hasn't been any error message since... Any idea what I might have done to cause this?

Thanks for your help!

Many of your questions are answered there. Since only one computer can be online at a time per account. You must re-register the other pc each time you use it. An easy way to get around this hassle would be to invest in a wireless router. If the laptop has wireless access and your home allows for good reception. You should be good to go - without the hassles of having to re-register your account each time you want to use a different pc. If your laptop isn't wireless ready. You would have to invest in a wireless card for the laptop. On top of what you would have to pay the wireless router. Some stores have combination packs that offer both items together.

One thing that you might be able to do, is program the other machine's MAC number to your NIC card if the NIC settings allow. My friend's Dell laptop as well as my Gateway Desktop has that feature. They both have Intel(R) PRO/100 VE NICs I also have a SMC USB NIC that I can program. Look under Advanced Settings for the NIC. The Intel setting is labeled "Locally Administered Address"

If the MAC number is the same on both machines, Insight doesn't ask you to re-register the computer. But remember you can only have one of the machines to the cable modem at a time and I think even my router messes up when I have my old Dell and new Gateway (cloned to old Dell MAC) online at once.

Rearranged,

You've made a detailed analysis of an unxeplainable behavior of SAS (The Registration System). I have seen it do many wild things including what you have described. Don't try to rationalize it or even understand it.

What Iggybot has described is dead on how it should be and if you follow his lead, you'll be alright!

Pricing for the items I mentioned above. Have come down to where the average person can in fact afford to purchase them. I'm personally not saying they are dirt cheap. But you can get a good wireless router and card for less than you'll pay for an XBox or Playstation.

Installation and setup of these items has become easier as well. Although you can in fact run into dead spots or connection issues do to signal strength. I think with many of the new routers this has become less of a problem.
