USA | Ok, bad title. But most times the bills to prevent muni wireless prevent wisps too. So because he's fighting for muni wireless, it helps wisps too. |

| I don't follow. How does eliminating the government as a competitor hurt WISP's? Especially if they plan to offer service where there are ALREADY WISP's?
OTOH, if my government decided it wanted to start up wireless in my neighborhood, I would be so un-scared it's not funny. Those guys can't even get a budget right, much less deal with angry customers on a Friday night because a mail server died or some AP took some lightning. |

Here's the deal. Go read an anti muni bill. You will see it is drawn up by the telco's (sbc, verizon, ect..) and is worded to prevent WISPs just as much as it is worded to prevent city's from deploying wi fi. So like it or not, we actually need to fight FOR city's to have the right to deploy broadband. |

HOUSE BILL No. 1148
Sec. 4(a) provides a grandfather clause to “protect” pre-existing systems. Under this guise, it freezes systems in place as they exist today. No expansion to any unserved area within the municipality after June 30, 2005. And no system upgrades to provide new services after June 30, 2005. Hope you're in the right neighborhood to be covered...
Well, I hope your not a WISP, because if it would have went through, no more upgrades. How long would YOU survive? |

Thanks for the link -- it took a bit for me to find the bill you were referring to. We don't all live in Indiana!
Now to set the record straight -- Indiana House Bill 1148 states the following --
Sec. 2. As used in this section, "political subdivision" has the meaning set forth in IC 36-1-2-13. The term includes any entity:
(1) owned, operated, or controlled by a political subdivision; or
(2) in which a political subdivision otherwise has an interest, whether direct or indirect.
In addition, the section you quoted should read
"Sec. 4. (a) This section does not apply to a political subdivision that provides services in an area in the political subdivision's jurisdiction on June 30, 2005. However, after June 30, 2005, a political subdivision described in this subsection may not:..."
I am a WISP and I would survive just fine. I am neither a political subdivision, nor does a political subdivision have any direct or indirect control over my business. Actually, that is one of the reasons I would never consider locating on a city owned water tower. I have dealt with political subdivisions in other areas of my life and would never want to bring that curse upon my business!  |
