[General] Has anyone got TIVO to work with VoIP?(P8)

I have packet8 and I am trying to get TIVO configured to work with it but I am not having much luck. I have a 1st generation TIVO if that makes a difference. The problem I am having is I am unable to get TIVO to successfully dial out and get the update. Any help would be appreciated.

Sample cabling from TiVO but any similar will work including home made - »https://store.tivo.com/main.aspx?cid=102

Tivo & packet8

I find that the early morning hours(5-8) work best for me. Also I'll change numbers when I have a problem. I think it depends on your broadband connection as to how stable your call is.I've used brighthouse and knology and have never missed more than 2 days although I manually start the call and sometimes have to recall several times to complete it.I have a series 1 sony svr-2000 and set the call to include 1+ area code.

Re: [General] Has anyone got TIVO to work with VoI

I have never had the call work with P8 and my DirecTivo. Possibly there is a difference between the D* version and the stand alone units, I don't know. Anyways, I also use the serial cable over my broadband connection with no problems.

Thanks for all of the replies. I just ordered the null modem serial cable and will use my laptop to make the connection.

Also see the following posts for some more information. They are not Packet8 specific but they may be helpful information nontheless...

Some people have had some luck as has been described in the above posts by doing some janked up stuff, but if it works then it is worth it. I myself have a DVR built into my satelitte and have ATT CV. Now it will not dial in, but it is no problem because I never watch movies on PPV which needs to dial in for that and the program guide doesn't download over the phone line.

I never could get my Series 1 Tivo to work with my VOIP provider (Voicepulse), but I did install a TurboNet network card in the Tivo. Using an inexpensive wireless bridge I an able get the programing schedule information over the internet with no problems. I even was able to do the initial setup call when I upgraded my hard drive.

9thTee sells the TurboNet cards.

I have my series 1 Tivo set to dial out at 9600. That works fine on Vonage.

It can be made to work on Vonage using slower speeds
and using the "High Quality" code as a prefix.

I just setup a DirecTV TIVO unit on Vonage about two
months ago using this type of configuration

As for Packet8 -- not sure and couldn't tell you.
I do know that Packet8 doesn't presently support
all the CODECs as Vonage and that could possibly
be an issue. In a nutshell, your VoIP line would
need to be able of sustaining fax or analog modem
transmissions. If those work then TIVO will work.

Re: [General] Has anyone got TIVO to work with VoIP?(P8)

I hooked up my null modem cable from my laptop to my TIVO serial connection and after making the changes to the modem as described it works like a champ! Connects everytime without fail. Thanks everyone for all the input and advice.
