not quite

end users still wont know what open source is, just that they have a different browser. the average joe doesn't care!

half of those downloads are probably from re-installs, upgrading, patching.. and those fake clicks. doubt they're unique.

Yeah, if they count every time they put a new update a download. Count about 20 from me.

Now that they are "mainstream" we will see more individuals trying to take advantage of the exploits.

I haven't seen the lights on at the Mozilla Foundation's main Mountain View office in almost a full week now, and I pass by their door (literally!) twice a day.

True, but how many people have installed it on other people's PC's from a CD or other removeable device? I have installed it on several friends' PC's from a flash drive.

Far fewer than those who have had to download it time and time again to address FF software updates.

Big time! The damn thing still doesn't work right, and shutsdown 10x as often as IE. I hardly use it anymore...

Funny, people sit around downloading something all the time, over & over &...

I'll second that. I have yet to encounter a site that causes Firefox to hang or hard crash.

I ran across my first one the other day - the A&E TV network's Web site at »www.aetv.com/ . Funny how it crashes Firefox on my Windows XP machine but not on my Linux box...

If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked something.

Geez, with a statement like that, you imply that your statement is FACT when it's nothing more than your opinion. How 'bout choosing your wording a bit more accurately ?

I just clicked on it using Firefox with no problems. I don't have the latest updates for FF though so I have no idea if that's the reason. I think I found just one site so far that doesn't render properly on Firefox and it's probably because they are using FrontPage extensions or something like that (it's not a commercial site).

Well there obviously isn't Remotely close to fifty million users!
And I think it's obvious to most that the number is artificial!
Pretty funny really, this type of thing has been going on for a long time to make things look better or more used/accepted. This isn't like a revelation or something, old news...

then you must not use java or surf....

I use both and if I want a crash, just surf multiple pages running java in tabs...

I don't need a number to tell me FF is better than alternative browsers. Sure, 50 million sounds a bit unrealistic, but at the end of the day it's a great browser that can only get better.
