- it's pathetic for the world's largest economy to be rated so low in an element of information technology. But hey, look at our education system; health care; having no national day off to vote; wages shrinking while corporate profits rise - the list of inequalities in America masquerading as 'someone else's problem' is enumerable. When we're no longer the hot-shot economy, being 16th (or 25th) won't matter! -- "The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppose." -- Frederick Douglass |

| You know what's pathetic... I mean besides thinking that our rank in consumer broadband penetration makes one iota of a difference other than bragging rights... Thinking that having a national day off to vote is an important issue; even better that you then proceed forward and mention the economy. -- Beagles really should come in convienent 10 packs. |

Thinking that having a national day off to vote is an important issue; even better that you then proceed forward and mention the economy. Gee, we're writing on a forum named "Broadband Reports" and you're complaining about someone pointing out how hapless it is that we're not even in the top 10 for broadband penetration? We have a winner for the big first priz ...
And what on earth is wrong with having a national day off for citizens to vote? Working 8 hours only to wait in line for hours to vote is in what way an example of a "shining democracy?"
Since you don't like that idea, how about having elections on the weekend? Oh, don't want to pay the poll workers time and half I guess ... sheesh ...
In case you were asleep this last time around, Florida enabled weekend polls and the turnout was amazing. People cited the fact that they didn't have to run around after work as the number one reason they voted. You sound like one of those folks that don't like when a lot of people turn out to vote. -- "The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppose." -- Frederick Douglass |

It's called "Civic Duty". Ever hear about it? It's what helped make this country what it is. Pardon me if your whining about having to go and vote after working doesn't impress me. It's your duty to make sure you vote, IF NOTHING ELSE, no matter if it does inconvenience you. If you dont, you dont have the right to bitch. You are a citizen of this country and you take your freedom so for granted in your gluttonus arrogance, then whine how bad it is and dont even bother to vote or get involved? If you feel it's so bad here, quit whining and get involved in a meaningfull way. Trouble is, that requires you to get off your fat ass and exert/inconvenience yourself and whining on line is much easier.
Myself, I couldn't care less what ranking in broadband penetration we are. Who cares? Bottom line is, we are the economy everyone in the world wants to market to, ESPECIALY CHINA and especially for high tech. If our economy is so screwed up as alarmists scream, why is this so? |

join:2004-06-26 | I've voted in the last 5 elections, no matter what time of day it was. My point is why should it be an inconvenience in the first place? Other democracies have holidays in order to vote, why not the U.S.? |

I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering why it matters. Is there any benefit to being number one, I sure as hell can't think of one. We're number 1 in IP addresses deployed and all it's done is caused other countries to whine.
said by Titus Pullo :And what on earth is wrong with having a national day off for citizens to vote? Forcing commerce to shutdown so that people can do something that should take no longer than 1 hour tops is ridiculous. Then you mention the economy.
said by Titus Pullo :Working 8 hours only to wait in line for hours to vote is in what way an example of a "shining democracy?" Go ask an Iraqi what it's like when someone is blown up in line. Ohhh, ohhh I have to wait I'm being oppressed.
said by Titus Pullo :Since you don't like that idea, how about having elections on the weekend? I don't care, I'm fine with weekends. I'm pretty sure most poll workers are volunteers and if they are getting paid much I doubt they'd care wether it's on the weekend or not. You've seen the people that work there right?
said by Titus Pullo :People cited the fact that they didn't have to run around after work as the number one reason they voted. Bottom line is people are lazy, we can't and shouldn't go around trying to get people to vote who are only doing so because it doesn't make them go out of their way to do so. Frankly the way it is now is a good way of cutting back on people voting without having any clue on what's going on in society. If you're too stupid to pay attention, you probably shouldn't be voting.
said by Titus Pullo :You sound like one of those folks that don't like when a lot of people turn out to vote. I don't like when a lot of idiots go out and vote based on what their favorite media person told them to do.
And just FYI, the only reason the polls were crowded was because people who hadn't voted before finally decided to get off their asses and do so. Again, if you aren't willing to wait because you fail to realize it's importance, it's probably best that you don't vote. -- Beagles really should come in convienent 10 packs. |

I believe P.T. Barnum summed it up nicely.... " A fool and his money are soon parted " Sounds about right. Those corporations are slowly bleeding the american system dry of said money. When that happens those nations find another nation to buy thier junk. We then fall into that great problem of being like nigeria or others. Real nice when that happens. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |

| reply to Combat Chuck said by Combat Chuck :Regular or Diet? Diet soda doesn't have anything in it that your body can actually recognize and process as food. It's a chemical concoction designed to fool your taste buds. My father in law is an alcoholic and since he quit drinking beer he goes through a couple of two litres of diet Pepsi a day. His doctor told him he'd rather see him drinking beer again. |

Yes, we have the most expendable capital. And we like low prices. That makes us a fool to purchase decent goods at a reasonable price? Our problem is that we wont do anything for anyone (with a few exceptions) without getting paid for it. We allways want more. We, for the most part, live lives of absolute luxury compared to the rest of the world and we thake that luxury for granted as our due in life.
Why is it, do you think, that so many companies want to outsource to other countries? It's because over there, those people will work damn hard for a lot less to feed and support their families and, sadly, many of those countries have better schools than we do because they set out to actually do so.
I have a friend who works for GM. It's absolutely astounding what he gets through the contract and feels he is entitled to: $20 something an hour, full medical, full dental, and combined sick days, negotiated weeks off and vacation-ALL PAID-of 8 WEEKS a year total among other things. And you wonder why cars are so expensive? And why GM wants to get rid of as many of them as it can? There comes a time when you cant just blindly ask for more. Like it or not, we have to compete in the world and there is no way we can, in the end compete with other countries right now with our inflated expectations. The reason we buy so much Chinese "junk" is that the same US made "Junk" is, in most cases way more expensive for any number of reasons
And, you want to know what my friend does for all this? He sits in a comfy chair, monitoring a computer that runs machines, reads a paper and drinks coffee and takes the occasional nap. Every once in a while, he has to clear a jam or something else.
We as a society and nation better wake up or we're going to find ourselves in deep trouble. |
