I use that service all the time to alert me of happenings on MY network and Symantec is one of the products that makes good use of the messenger service. Also my APC units send out a msg whenever there is a power spike or outage. There are various other apps I use that take use of the messenger service as well.
AFAIK the corporate Symantec products are the only ones that use the messenger service. And in a corporate environment, the messenger service is useful. But in a home environment, especially in a single-PC household with no router or firewall, there's no need for it at all. Why a consumer (not corporate) version of a Symantec product would want to use the messenger service is beyond me. It's not like it needs to send messages from a server to a client.
