Just got my new Dell 700m last wednesday, I have been in the process of moving over all my files from my HP ZE 5375. I now have them all over so I wanted to provide a review of this laptop.

One main word for this laptop, tiny! It weighs around 4.5 pounds with the extended life battery.

One main rant but you get used to it, is the placement of the period key. After awhile though I started to get used to it, and could press it with no problems.

The screen on this laptop is amazing: 1280x800 widescreen resolutions and it is very bright! I had no problem using it the other day in the car when the sun was very bright. I used to have a hard time seeing the screen on the HP in the bright sunlight.

Is the casing metal or plastic? At least the newer Dells no longer have that blue plastic surrounding the keyboards.

Don't beat up the new laptop like you did to the old one (The HP looks heavily beaten up)
One thing asthetically I dont like about the 700m, is the battery sticks out from teh back.

After looking at the pictures, it doesnt come with an OS CD? Or does it, because I see that blue paper that looks like a CD telling you information on how to obtain CDs!

Besides those two things, It should be a nice laptop for you Enjoy it! Ill take the HP off your hands if you dont want it anymore SIs is looking for a laptop.

Thanks for the answer; I will be starting to consider Dells again as a choice for a notebook.

I will try not to beat this one up, I put my laptops through heck, I go through a new one about every 2 years.

My HP was only about 1 year old, it is a P4 2.4 my wife has inherited the HP.

Because I am very mobile, the 9 pound HP was getting to much to lug around all over.

This one works out great, I can put it right in my briefcase that I take into school without having to carry a separate laptop bag.

You are right, Dell PCs do not come with an OS CD anymore, however all you have to do is chat with tech support, and state you are technical and like to change hard drives, and are concerned about not having the media.

I did this, and they are sending me my XP Pro CD as well as Dell drivers CDs free of charge in the mail.

Congrats on the lappy. Your laptop bag should keep your 700m from getting beat to death. I use a shinza sleeve because it fits tight and that way it doesn't hog up as much room in my bag.
Wonder when they started eliminating the Windows XP CD. I bought my 700M in November and the OS CD was included as well as driver cd's and some other crap.

I was wondering this as well as I just ordered a Dell 600M (should be here Friday) and the first thing I usually do is wipe the HD and redo everything myself. It will be a real pain if I have to wait a few weeks to get the freaking CDs mailed to me that should have come in the box

Im extremely lucky my HP (Compaq) came with an ACTUAL OS CD. I guess most manufacturers are doing that to save money on CD Production.

There is a utility on the computer under Dell Accessories, Dell OS Recovery CD.

This enables you to make an OS CD on your own.

I somehow think that is to make a restore CD, I dont get why Dell doesnt just keep on giving out OS CDs like they did in the past.

Send the Home Divison support an email, they will send you them for free!

This is the exact message I sent them:

quote:
My system did not come with the XP pro OS CD or the Drivers CD.

My understanding because I want the security of having these CD's in case I replace a drive is to contact support within 30 days of purchase, and I will be sent free of charge the OS CD as well as the Drivers CD.
In about two hours I got this message back:

quote:
In order to resolve the issue that you required OS and Drivers CD, I will definitely move forward to get the CD?s send to you. Please confirm the following address (as per your email) so that I can setup the service.

They sent them over night, I received them about 3 days later, this included my XP pro original CD, Dell Drivers CD and the Dell Applications CD.

The e-mail form is the best way to go about this.

Big question ... is it a regular OEM CD or is it a system restore CD or Dell tweaked CD? In other words if you use it to wipe your HD and reinstall the OS will you have just WinXP on your machine or will you also have all the apps and crap that Dell adds on their as well?
