[News] FTP being blocked?

I was wondering if anyone is able to setup and allow an FTP server to function in Lexington, KY? I set one up and was able to get to it on my local network without any problems. However after opening the firewall and allowing the traffic to come in via the WAN, I get a connection refused. It appears that Insight is blocking port 21. I am just trying to transfer a 30MB file. Any input would be great!

what FTP software are you using?

I'd suggest Serv-U if you are using IIS.

OR you could transfer it via IRC.

OR you could use gmail (1GB Storage)

OR you could use Yousendit

Are you behind a router by any chance? I have never been able to get someone from outside to connect to an ftp server behind our home router (even with DMZ enabled). It works fine (to this day) on a computer that is directly hooked up to the cable modem. (IL, though)

I have tried using CuteFTP Server Home (edition) & the stock ftpd software in Solaris 10 for SPARC. I am behind a firewall/router and have had this work in the past when opening port 21 to the WAN and routing it to the IP address of the FTP server.

Ok. It was just me being stupid. I upgrade my firewall's firmware and assumed things would have been the same as before. I was wrong. I turns out that now I have additional NAT routes to put configure with Network Objects and firewall rules.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm with you ingo, I've had all sorts of problems with my linksys and FTP. In fact, I gave up months ago

I could at one point connect using Internet explorer, but no other FTP software...that was pretty much the point I quit.

I have also tried setting up our work router (Cisco Pix 500) for use with IIS FTP to no avail, but that bitch is hard to even log into, let alone set anything on.

Good to hear you got it worked out!

And Goodbye to insight..this is my last month...moving...going with alltel ultra DSL. Same speed supposedly and I hope better pings

Peace

Thanks for reminding me to check the Alltel website. I'm sold on the ultra DSL as well. I'll be switching next month.

To top things off, I may even go with satellite TV and get rid of insight altogether.

Dumb Ass. It cracks me up how you all always blame Insight the minute you can't get your stuff to work.

Who's the dumbass that comes in anonymously and makes a rude remark based on no information?

I see a guy having a problem getting FTP to work and a couple others trying to pitch in. I'm leaving insight because I'm moving to an area without it, and adz133 simply stated he's sold on ultra DSL, he didn't say anything about insight being bad, I think he just hopes (as I do) that Alltel is better.

And its easy to blame insight for overloaded nodes, and lack of equipment because it happens and its documented. Read some of the other posts on this forum before you start talking shit.

Insight has been good to me. But I've had broadband in a few different cities and it wasn't even close to great. I'm hoping alltel will be better (though I doubt I can get ultra where I'm at).

It cracks me up when trolls totally miss the point of a post and are made to look an idiot. Try coming back and registering after your 13th birthday and have an adult conversation with us.

And now for probably one of the oldest images on the internet that I think sums it up nicely.

johnboy45, I was simply asking to see if Insight decided to port block port 21. Other ISP's have in the past and thought that Insight might have done the same. I did admit it was a configuration problem on my end after all. I assumed that these forums are to help out people with issues NOT to just slam them.

That's my 2 cents.

I'd agree that it wouldn't be the first time an ISP had taken port blocking steps without notifying it's customer base. I'd also agree that it's always best to try as much as possible to rule out something on your end being the cause first. Although this forum can sometimes get a bit heated. I don't really see why it had to get that way in this thread. Maybe the person who posted anonymously has information or history with this person. That we are unaware of. Or maybe they are just trying to stir the pot a bit for fun. But it could be they feel they have an axe to grind. Not the first time we've seen that here.

Yes the forum is here to help all of us when we have an issue. I think it also gets used wisely - as a clearinghouse of information in regards to Insight.

I personally feel it sets a bad precedent to jump down someones throat just for asking a question or for help. It'd be different if this was a user who came in always complaining - when many times it had been shown the user needed to resolve some issues on there end. I'm not sure that was 100% the case here.
