My 3g iPod has not died on me and i have had it since October of 2003. The iPod has a 25min cache so it will not skip unless it is between that 15 second period to spin up the HD and fill the cache. It will be fine for walking, as I have not had a problem with it. My uncle has had problems with his DJ, having 4 HD's die, and is planning on an iPod as well.
