[Firmware] HyperWRT | Linksys | others?

I don't know a lot about the open source firmwares out there. From what I've heard.. HyperWRT Firmware by...Avenger??.... seems to be the best choice?

If this is correct... would you choose HyperWRT over the official Linksys/Ciscoe firmware? And why?

Also... if you install HyperWRT firmware and you notice no improvements or simply just don't like it, can you re-install the official Linksys firmware for the WRT54Gv2?

Thanks...

There really isn't a "best" per 'se. But Avenger20 See Profile's HyperWRT sticks close to the Linksys firmware with only minor tweaks, the power hack being the big thing. The power hack will allow you to crank up the power of the radio to allow you to get signal in those hard to reach areas. DD-WRT is another good choice if you would like all the little extras that the Sveasoft firmware has, but without the hassle of paying Sveasoft for it.;)

I use both HyperWRT and DD-WRT and both work flawlessly on my WRT54g.

Yes. And WPA-PSK TKIP. And WPA-PSK TKIP+AES.

1) Can be safely loaded over the stock Linksys firmware (even using the same Linksys TFTP program).

2) Can adjust transmit power.

3) Can telnet into the router to do stuff via a Linux command shell.

4) Can run Kai Xlink with it.

docs on this firmware are sparse, what does it mean to use both tkip and aes? that is uses higher strenght encrytion AND changes the key regularly? or is it either/or since some pcs may not support aes?

I interpret it to mean that it'll do either/or when that selection is made. So far, that's the way it seems to work.

No, it just means that you can use both simultaniously. For example, you have one pc using PSK-AES, and onother one, that only can handle PSK-TKIP.

PSK-AES and PSK-TKIP are both safe, but PSK-AES uses AES encryption (stronger encryption), while PSK-TKIP uses RC4 encryption.
