I am a VCAST subscriber in New York City/New Jersey. The EVDO network is very different then the 1x call network. It has different dead spots and is completely unavailable for many hours per week. If I make a phone call in certain areas the EVDO drops out and remains unavailable until I move to a different cell tower. I am reluctant to continue paying $15.00 for VCAST due to all the outages. I can't imagine paying $80.00 for such unreliable service.

I have found that the coverage is very good, assuming that you are in a coverage area. There are antenna boosters and amplifiers that you can use to extend the range and speed even more.
We have been testing EVDO and pushing it to see how far it will go, AND it can go pretty far, see our web site for some tests we have recently done.
