speed and signal strength

Does the speed of the connection depend on how many "bars" of service you have? Is this a viable alternative to dialup and satellite to people in rural areas that might have a cell tower in range?

Re: speed and signal strength

Verizon is well know for having an invisible cap at around 100MB per month, even though the service is supposed to be "unlimited". So, if you just need internet for email and general surfing, yes it would be a good alternative. If you like to download mp3's, movies, etc, then no.

Re: speed and signal strength

I'd say 100Mb isn't enough even for webbrowsing. I can rack up more than that in a single day of browsing, JUST browsing. Even email use would be questionable if user decides to send a couple of pictures to his relatives/friends or his account is spammed by dozens of letters every day.

I agree....

A broadband account just for surfing requires MUCH more than 100 MB. I can also easily rack up that much bandwidth in less than a days surfing. What's the point of broadband if you can't use it? I ask this not against Verizon's service, but for people who are planning on using it as their main internet connection at home.

I've had it for over a year, and have never run into a cap problem. It's really tremendous -- and the full 1xRTT coverage is almost everywhere.. Nothing like getting 100kbps down at a rest stop in the middle of Kansas.

I use it all of the time, downloading several gigs without any problem. I have never heard of this cap, and several people I work with go well over 100MB as well. I am wondering if the situation you are speaking relates to a MB plan?

Ditto here. I use it quite a bit and haven't hit a "cap" yet. The "Broadband Access" plan requires you to purchase unlimited data service so I'd expect that there'd be a major uproar if those of us who pay $85/mo for the unlimited plan got capped.

Re: speed and signal strength

for those of you who use the high speed... what speeds do you get, and does it depend on signal strength ?

There is no such cap! I have downloaded (and uploaded) well over 1GB in a month and they have never said a word. In fact, a user on www.evdo-forums.com reports using over 11GB EACH month using sharing programs and they have yet to say a word!

Speed is decent - usually see about 525kb download and just over 100kb on upload (normal is about 105 upload).

Coverage is not bad - works in many parking garages.

Bottom line - if you want this, get the Novatel v620. Had the Pc3220 (which is probably the same as the 5220) and it seemed to think there was "no service" where this card (v620) works beautifully!

Re: speed and signal strength

FYI.

The PC3220 is not an EVDO card, it is a 1xRTT card.
The PC 5220 is an EVDO card and is 1xRTT and 1xEVDO
Novatel V620 is an EVDO card and is 1xRTT and 1xEVDO

There are a few threads that compare the Novatel V620 and PC 5220 at »www.EVDOforums.com

It could be, but Verizon is not deploying this technology in rural areas.

Yes, EVDO speeds are dependent on the SNR (Signal-to-noise) ratio seen by the receiver.
In many cases, higher signal strength leads to better SNR.
