| [Speeds] Neighborhood Maxed Out
I've noticed over the past week that at prime-time my download speed has fallen to around 900 kbps (or less), with a lot of lost packets/retransmits. I called Insight Tech Support last night and they told me that the CPU for the router closest to my drop was running at 96% and that there were 252 of 257 possible connections active. They also said that the capacity problem had been reported. I've sent an email to my local office here in Springfield, IL asking about an upgrade for the neighborhood. Any one have any other suggestions for getting this corrected? Also for anyone reading this, I'm on far south side of Springfield, if you've also noticed a drop in speeds. |

| Im in Bloomington, IN and Im getting basically the same problem. During peak hours, my download time drops to around 1200kbs, when its normally 3200kbs. This has just started happening over the last few weeks. Before that, peak hours were fine. Any suggestions?

| Just as an update, I called insight tech support to see if anyone else had reported slow downs in my area. The guy did some test and said he could see it was extremely slow right now (11:13pm) and that the local branch was aware of this issue. Apparently tonight/tomorrow morning at 4:00am they taking the system down and swapping out and upgrading their routers in the area. I believe it has been mentioned before that Insight is performing this change in some locations. Anyway, hopefully tomorrow after this, it will be back to normal. |

| Its 9:46pm central time (Bloomington, IN) and I just ran a speed test. My speeds are still about normal (3000kb)which is a good thing. It will be interesting to see if they hold up around 11:00pm which is usually the time I have been getting real slow connections lately.

| reply to zookrod I've not seen this occur on my side of town. So it could be something specific to your area. But it would also be worth a shot to have a look at my post here »Re: Minimum Sys to get paid-for speed? Even though it looks as if this might be a neighborhood issue. | reply to zookrod Insight called and left a message today. Everything looked ok, but unfortunately that was at around 11 AM this morning and everything would be fine then. My download speeds are usually 3600 to 3700 kbps with no dropped packets at that time of day. I called them back tonight and they're referring this to their 'install/equipment' unit. Not sure what that means We'll see. 7 PM, here now and speed down to 1441. Everybody in my neighborhood must be playing WoW! |

| reply to sly28 Sounds like they made it worse instead of better. Sorry to here that! That kind of maintenance I could do without. It's after 12 AM here and the neighbors must be in bed. 3686 down and not a dropped packet seen. Too bad it's time for me to sleep too... |

1 edit | reply to zookrod tech support is a joke with insight! their only solution is to recycle the damn modem! WAKE UP it is your end that is screwed up. If this keeps happening with my speed between 7 and 12am I will be moving down packages from plus to normal. NO way is it worth it for me to pay 80 bucks a month to get speeds that I can get for 40. These people that run insight have absolutely no clue, and the day competition comes in is the day that insight goes bankrupt because of their incompentence -- InsightBB = Monopoly |

2005-04-13 23:38:13 EST: 1140 / 481 Your download speed : 1168367 bps, or 1140 kbps. A 142.6 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 493542 bps, or 481 kbps.
I tell the guy I have the plus package and that getting transfer of 400 KB/sec is not acceptable. He tells me that is what the speed is for 6000 down. I said your math is not right, it should be over 600 KB/sec. He said oh yeah your right! And this is tech support, what a joke.
That was my latest test. This is not acceptable and I will be downgrading tomorrow night if it is the same. God I wish I could get DSL! -- InsightBB = Monopoly |

Hold on let me be Insight support!! ~start sarcasm~ Did you power cycle your modem at least 50x's? Ah well it is your router that is causing the issue! Are you running QIC assistant? NO? Well you have to have that bloatware POS running! What are you thinking!! #script reader turn page# Well it isn't our issue (we dont have network problem's here ever at insight) It looks like it is a problem with your PC...Thank you for calling Insight! Have a nice day! ~end sarcasm~
These problem's seem to be a regular thing for alot of people...I might have to start a why Insightbb sucks page! and use my Insight webspace to host it with! lol |

| reply to MSauk I have been having similar numbers in Bloomington, IN. The last 2 nights it has gotten incredibly bad. I was getting roughly 370kbps download (should be in the 2700 range at least!) and 365 kbps upload during peak hours. I called Insight and they are sending someone on friday to check my line, but it will be fine during the day. I never have a problem then so whats the point? Im no expert but I would guess the node(?) is maxed out with too many users. I would ASSUME they know about this matter. Anyone have thoughts on how best to see if they know what the problem is and if they plan on fixing it? Not sure if the tech support guys know that kind of information... |

| reply to zookrod I spoke with the 'Technical Manager' at our local office here in Springfield today. I told him about the CPU usage and capacity problems. He stated that they are doing upgrades here next week and that I should see my "speeds returning to normal." I asked if they were doing equipment upgrades. He said no, they are opening up more bandwidth. I'm assuming that means more bandwidth to the neighborhood routers. I'm not sure how that helps an overtaxed router, but I'll report back next week.....
As for complaints about Insight's technical support - I disagree. When I have called the broadband support number (not the cable number) I have always gotten what seem to be straight answers. I always start the call by telling them I have power cycled my modem, router and restarted my PC's (I usually really have . They've never asked me to do it again. Last time I called, I told the tech about the slow prime time speeds as opposed to day time and that I had already rebooted - he asked me to hold while he checked - and came back with the router utilization I've posted and that the power to my modem was fine. He told me they had already notified my local office about the router and suggested I call the local office. I don't recall getting that good of Tech Support from anyone else. Definitely not the competition, SBC! As with all Tech Support a lot of it depends on who you get when you call, I guess. |
