said by Insight Tech :Ok then go buy your Vonage and try dialing 911. Suggest next time you call someone a liar try it out and test the theory first this way you dont look like an ass when everyone that knows its true looks at your post. I did. I called 911 on my Vonage line and was directly connected to the emergency fire/police dispatcher for my city. The line is answered 24/7 and was told it was "THE" number to connect to. |

| reply to Insight Tech I'm not disputing your 911 story. It's just that your post is riddled with misstatements. What part of the SIP message are you referring to, for example, when you say in your first statement that the phone "transmits a signal to the server stating it needs X amount of bandwidth to make the voice transmission"? Take a look at your adapter logs; you won't find any such signal. Likewise with your second statement that "the server replies with at the time whatever bandwidth it can squeeze out for that call." Although bandwidth may optionally be specified according to SDP 2327, it is not part of the session description for any VoIP provider I know.
How do you expect anyone to take your post seriously when you invent your "facts"? I'm more than willing to stand by the information I've provided in this forum. Are you? |

| reply to vonsen Re: So you wanna try Voip? Alarm System
I currently have the Vonage VOIP, and my alarm system worked great for a month, now it stopped working i had the alarm company put and they are puzzeled they installed a DSL filter, but it did not help, the alarm dials the central station, the handshake takes place, but when it starts sending the touchtone codes there tends to be a small echo in the background, and it is causing the central station to disconnect... have you found a cure for this, will the "backwards DSL filter work for this?
thanks Michael |

I have Vonage and 911 works just fine..You just need to register it with them.....I HAVE used it and it DOES work....
Also, when you trash Vonage and reccomend a company you work for, you might wanna expect a few guys to call you out |

Sort of off topic, but does anyone know what happened to vonsen ? He's dropped off the radar here and he sure had some high quality posts such as this. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." |

| reply to vonsen From my understanding E911 has not been implemented by any of the major broadband VoIP providers fully to 100%. I believe Vonage will have most areas covered by the end of the year.
Most of these providers relay the E.911 data via HTTP to centralized servers that have a database full of PSAP's. These PSAP (Public Service Answering Point) centers are basically emergency operators that will forward the emergency calls to the established 911 center. The problem for not having E.911 in all areas stem from the poviders not having their DB's updated with rural PSAP's throughout the country.
Anyway to the above poster regarding "signaling" coming from their IP device, I believe what he/she was trying to describe is QoS functionalities, however these policies are generally assigned at router/firewall level. Most times when you pick up the telephone the dial tone is artificially generated by the device itself. Only after dialing digits into the phone will your session begin to be established wih the SIP proxy. |

| reply to vonsen I found voipwired.com really helpful in understanding VoIP. The site has info on providers, their different plans, what hardware I need, how to make my connection more reliable, etc., the only thing is that you have to register to access the forum, I hope that changes. Here is the link I found most helpfull »www.voipwired.com/info/info_faq.htm |
