Re: Modem setup with Sonicwall TZ170

Update for those interested. I'm finally able to access the modem config through my sonicwall.

Network Settings
Modem 192.168.0.1/16
Sonicwall TZ170 192.168.1.1/24
Cisco 2950 192.168.1.105/24
Access Point 192.168.1.104/24
Printer server 192.168.1.103/24
DHCP server 192.168.1.100/24
Clients via DHCP 192.168.1.10-192.168.1.99/24

Over the last year I've had three occasions were internet requests and 192.168.0.1 will get no response, turning the modem off then on resolves this.

The modem's DHCP server can be unreliable, I would avoid using it.

Start troubleshooting with a direct connection to the modem and work your way deeper into your Lan.

Thanks for the replies, I mis-spoke. The modem should definitely be doing the PPOE.

Selected that option and added username and password. In addition my Sonicwall is set to DHCP on WAN interface. This is driving me nuts, it has to be something simple I'm overlooking.

You can have "PPPoE is on the modem" selected with the dot in the gui, but you must also have a user ID and password entered for the modem to actually do the authentication.

Without a user ID and password entered and "PPPoE is on the modem" selected the modem will relay/bridge a PPPoE session.

If the modem is not doing the PPPoE session I don't think its possible to reach its IP address from within the PPPoE session.

Sorry, I did'nt even fully read your thing. Well I have no idea, if you had a linksys/cisco router I might be able to help.

Since i'm doing PPOE on the router, there shouldn't be a dual NAT issue.

From what I can tell the TZ170 is getting a class A via DHCP from the modem. The router LAN port is 192.168.1.1/16
and the modem is 192.168.0.1/16.

Can you explain NAT redirection, I'm at a loss here.

Make sure NAT redirection is off.

Did you mean you can't ping 192.168.0.1? What do you have on that address? It's the admin address of the modem.

Need some help here. I've done everything I can imagine and I'm at a loss. Basically I want to be able to manage/login to my modem without a direct connection.

I have a 5100b, set up to do PPP on modem
My Sonicwall is set to receive it's WAN IP from DHCP
I have W2k server doing DHCP internally. Giving out 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.100/255.255.0.0. I've excluded 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.10 for static IPs I use.

All connections work, I can ping the firewall, DHCP server, AP, and switch from any computer on the LAN. What I can't do is ping 192.168.0.1

sorry corrected 192.168.0.1

Any help would be appreciated!
