| Zone Alarm Pro or Sygate Firewall Pro
I run Zone Alarm Pro 4.5 on my windows Xp system I also have another machine that I run windows 2000 on it and also Zone alarm Pro 4.5. I want to try a different firewall that's provides a bit better security I have heard that Sygate Pro 5.5 is pretty good. Can some one tell me what are the Pro's and the Con's between them both, or if someone can recommend a different firewall that will give adequate security. Thx |

| reply to VeGeTaX ZA is an application based firewall and Sygate is rules based,so depending on how you want to control what goes on your comp..
I personally would choose Sygate...:) -- To be a Canadian is a blessing! |

2 edits | Generally firewalls are a combination of rule based features (packet filtering rules) and application based features (application allow/deny rules), and the security wonks argue about how to classify each. Wilders, for example, calls both Zone Alarm Pro and Sygate Pro rules based firewalls in their tutorial at »www.wilders.org/firewalls.htm. And if you look at the applications tab of Sygate, there is an application based firewall there. If you look at the advanced rules of ZAP, there is a rule based firewall there. Even Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5, which I am currently using, starts out life as a rule based firewall telling what to do about DHCP, DNS, ICMP, etc. and then adds a set of rules about what to allow/deny for each application that accesses the internet. And of the two, I would also choose Sygate for superior logging and insight into what is happening in your system. But not because it is a rule based firewall and ZAP is not. I have only two issues with Sygate, both of which can be worked around somewhat. 1) It does not recognize the use of a local proxy for internet access and allows open access through it; and 2) It allows applications to act as a server by default, whereas usually none or few need to. |

| reply to VeGeTaX Sygate Pro - I prefer the rules based system it has - it is actually a combination of application and rules, though, if you think about it. I've used Zone Alarm Free back in the pre-4.0 days, and didn't like the time it took to start up, so I switched. The current version appears to be 5.5 build 2710. The free version of Sygate also has the advanced rules as well - this is something you couldn't do in the free version of Zone Alarm. -- "Kayura or Badamon, whichever you are, you should know that I will never give up this battle. 1 edit | reply to VeGeTaX There is a bug that some people experience in that Sygate prohibits Windows update from working. Although most have found workarounds I unfortunately did not. I went back to ZA Pro. I liked Sygate better but this bug annoyed the crap out of me. Just Go to the Sygate forum and do a search. I would do the free trial and see if you have this problem. If not defintiely go with Sygate
edit: here is a link to some info on this bug »Windows Update error 0x80072EE2 Sygate Personal Pr |

What version of Sygate are you using? Last time I checked, Sygate is an app based firewall, with the ability to add custom rules. Same goes for ZA. |

| reply to VeGeTaX SPF is app based mostly. Free or pro.
It is not recommended if you have local proxy software, but Avast's webShield is an exception IMO. It works well with Sygate.
Sygate has good logging abilities. Yesterday I visited my sister's family, they have F-Secure security suite. And the adsl connection is not what they are expecting, in speed.
I am not familiar with that FW, and don't think they had any baddies running as server, but I sure missed the logs I have been used to with SPF. Just to see what programs were connecting out.
My vote as a Firefox user goes for Sygate. Don't need ZA's added features for malware control. |

| reply to VeGeTaX Beware of Zone Alarm (free or pro), especially if you use any p2p application. Since about the 4.5 release (current release is 5.5) well over a year ago, many users have been plagued by a memory leak associated with the core executable (vsmon.exe) for Zone Alarm. For me, the issue has grown from a mild nuisance to problem sufficient to motivate me to find a new firewall (reason I came to this forum). For more info on the issue, see this link »jwm4.typepad.com/newground/2005/···ala.html.
Bottom line: Zone Labs, software's developer/distributor, refuses to even acknowledge the issue exists, despite a large volume of posts from numerous users in their support forum. Let me add that I have used ZA Pro for approximately 6 years and have been very satisfied with its security functionality and user interface. But when any program absorbs several hundred MB of memory (often in excess of 500MB) on a daily basis, requiring daily plus restarts, that software is going to only reside in the history folder of my life! |
