1.0.3 will clear that up. Install it over 1.0.2

This should be a nice update once it is released.

However, I would like it more if they released small updates, like 500kB's, instead of downloading the whole 5MB package every single time. I think it's sort of a drawback to firefox if you are on dialup and have to wait 30min each time...

Yep, know what you're up against.
Have friend still on dialup because no broadband available yet in his area. Do downloads for him then burn to a CD.

Is anyone else having a problem with the Nightly Build Linux FF 1.0.3's? I don't overwrite the current folder, I always rename it & extract the file so it's a new browser folder, but for some reason it doesn't want to run unless I let it make it's own profile. Which is weird as I haven't had that problem with all the other Nightly Builds before, they all used the current Firefox profile & worked. Of course some would disable any extensions that didn't work with the new one, but one could still USE the Browser.

Santa Fe,

If you have not already done so, may want to read through posts at second candidates for firefox 1.0.3. If you don't find any posts may want to place a post to let them know of the problem.

And this story just goes on and on... (see the URL above) with Another shot at 1.0.3

"After further consideration (and investigation,) we have decided that it may be necessary to take a rather larger change into 1.0.3 than we had planned. We've run into one of those "fix the root cause or patch around the symptoms" trade-offs and to prevent future security issues, we're leaning towards the "fix the root problem" fix.".

Read the comments about broken extensions etc. I think we will be very lucky to have 1.1 come June (it was supposed to be March not too long ago). I will live with the vulnerabilities in my 1.02 until some stability is obtained here.

I saw this coming also, it has always been like this for the over two years I have been using Mozilla software.

I am going to sit on this v1.0.3 build I am using as it is working very well unless Stipe grabs one and optimizes it.

I am not to concerned about extensions breaking as they usually break from version release to version release and get updated. They kind of drive each others development in that respect.

I am really interested once IE7 is released how many users move back to IE from Firefox if Mozilla can not keep to any schedule they set. That is one of the big complaints about MS-IE not going anywhere for years on end.

An excellent question!

I've been around only a short time, but long enough that most of you know how I feel about a few certain issues.

***People also know that I both love and use Firefox.
I also use IE and look forward to the release of IE7.

What I have a hard time understanding though, is why (more often than not it seems), Firefox users have to constantly jump all over IE users as if they were some kind of disease or something.
Why always the "holier-than-thou" attitude among FF users?
(Keep in mind I'm not pointing fingers at anyone specifically).

Firefox is not without faults, far from it in fact.
And IMHO a Looooong way for being a Browser that the "average" user (namely 90% of the World) can fully understand and use without a lot of tweaking.

To get back to the original point, while I'm sure I will continue to use Firefox, (remember, I like tweaking), I think if IE7 is any good at all, there will indeed be a lot of people that will have had enough of all this nonsense of trying to successfully update while keeping everything "working", among other never ending irritations.

I also feel that serious exploits will become more common as the Browser becomes more popular. (That is if it does).

Only my VERY HUMBLE OPINION (again).
Sorry, I know many are tired of hearing this same ol' speech.

Just remember.....Firefox is not some sort of "Digital God".
It's just another Browser.
And people can dump it as quickly as they found it. (Especially if they don't eventually get their act together).
Have a nice day.

I agree jabar. I started using Firefox after hearing about all of IE's flaws. You constantly hear people in this forum berate Microsoft everytime a new vulnerability is discovered and Microsoft takes a little time to issue a patch. Now we discover that Firefox has a gaping security hole with Javascript which other browsers do not have (that is IE and Opera) and yet the only workaround is to disable Javascript completely. Where is that lightning fast response to this security vulnerability that Mozilla Developers are supposedly known for? I think Opera must be alot more refined and secure so I am dumping Firefox and following the lead of the Norwegians and using Opera primarily and Maxthon when I must.

I do use Firefox and Thunderbird and I'm waiting to see what IE 7 will be offering. Has anybody heard if IE 7 coming out will include an update to OE also?

I use Win2K out of choice and have no intention of upgrading to XP - I am waiting for Longhorn. So any possibility of my using IE7 prior to that is not in issue and I have no desire to go back to IE6 or use any IE6 shell.

That being said, I see a pretty large return migration to Ie7 amongst XP users.

Firefox received a huge amount of great publicity but growth I believe has peaked unless greater control is taken over the whole update process and the extension system. It is very much now a matter of quality control and whilst I have no problem with the 6 or so extensions I use I thoroughly research them prior to installing them. That being said there are far too many dilletantes writing extensions which are either broken or break other extensions or the author simply loses interest and goes on to something else.

"Average Joe/Jill" cannot be expected to mess around like we constantly do with tinkering with this and tinkering with that and I am sure the novelty has worn off for many.

With a reasonably stable IE7 and without too many holes the growth potential of Firefox will be stymied. It is "out of the box" more secure than IE but the image of it being so much more secure than IE has been severely dented. It appears clear that all the supposed "hatred" for MS can be forgotten in a heartbeat by many people. Look at the generally good reception that MS has received for their Antispyware app (née Giant) by some avowed MS haters.

Hello Peter,
Allow me to indulge a bit.

Good point on the use of MS Anti-Spy (Old Giant). Hell, I use it myself. Not all MS products are horrible yet the mind set of some would suggest MS is the bane of mankind.

I have 50 tried and true extensions installed. Only 2 failed when I switched to v1.0.3. I am not saying I need all of these or even half, I just figured as long as I am installing daily builds of one type or another I may as well put FF through it's paces. The most ever was 70 installed back with v0.9 and that was thanks to Carson who convinced me it was fun to try and break FF on a daily basis plus it is good feedback to the extensions devs.

For many people IE is just convenient and they have no need or desire to switch to Firefox. A lot of people even remain unharmed from running IE. With Longhorn on the horizon even if it were to be late by a year all bets are off for the Fox taking over.

I will keep using it as many will, but growth as you pointed out will be at a trickle. Who know MS could wave enough money in front of the right faces and FF could be back to square one. Lets hope not.

Another possible source of competition for Firefox is Netscape 8.

In past versions of Netscape 7.x the full installation included the basic plug-ins (including Mozilla ActiveX) so users had a browser that would render basically all web site without having to fuss with installing plug-ins.

If Netscape does the same for Netscape 8, your "Average Joe/Jill" who wants to see music videos at Yahoo! Launch will probably prefer Netscape 8 to Firefox.

If Netscape retains the same EULA for the final Netscape 8 as the Beta theres no way I'd install on my system!

I think that the millions that jumped the AOL ship have also spread the word. IMHO AOL is a sinking ship and as long as they have Netscape in their control it just may sink with them.
