Bell okays naked-DSL... what's my next step?

There are reports on this forum that Bell is now allowing users of DSL Sympatico the ability to cancel their local Bell phone lines. The DSL service will still work. This is called naked-DSL or dry-DSL.

What is the next step?

Should I call Bell to cancel my phone line? Or should I call Sympatico? Or should I sign up at Vonage first to make sure they can port my Montreal number?

I want to do this, but I'm not sure what steps I should take in what order. Help!

Re: Bell okays naked-DSL... what's my next step?

Sounds risky... if you cancel your phone line first you probably won't be able to port it to VoIP - at least not without a period of being disconnected - and if you try to port it first your Bell line might get disconnected, along with your DSL. Sometimes the left cheek doesn't know what the right cheek is doing.

May I suggest an alternative. If you have wiring in your house for 2 phone lines, why not consider getting your DSL (or conversely, your phone line) switched to the other line. Then your phone and DSL service will be neatly separated into one phone line, and one dry DSL line. Next you could order a VoIP service, and once you're happy with it, request to get your number ported. This way you wouldn't run any risk of your DSL getting accidentally disconnected, nor of losing your phone service for an extended period.
