southern NJ now on CRAN

I lost my connection for a few minutes, when it returned I did a trace route to www.comcast.net. CRAN is in southern Ocean County, possibly all of South Jersey. Here are the results:

You might be on the CRAN since you have a few internal hops. The thing is that you only have a few internal hops. I have 10 hops on the Comcast network before I leave it.

Now you might be closer to the "exit hop" than I am which would explain it, but it seems odd that you have such few hops before you exit the Comcast network.

Perhaps someone who works for Comcast can tell by looking at it, one way or the other? I tend to think it is for a few reasons. The most important, before tonight all my trace routes had named addresses, ie. comcast.core etc. The hops always began with 68.87 now it is 68.86. Also, this could be coincidence, but my connection got faster, I can literally hit 6600kbps on some speed tests now, the cap on my gold tier service. The only doubt I have is what you brought up Mbernste, that it only has added one extra hop inside the comcast network as compared to my old trace routes.

You are right on - the 68.86.xx.xx is the key.

There were more South Jersey CMTS's migrated overnight - you are on 1 of them.

Just as with the other routing platform, some areas will see more internal hops than others. You have 4, I have 6, Mbernste has 10.

Based on what i've heard about it, the system is so 1st class the extra hops should be seamless - Glad you like it!

Looks like I got it too. I have more hops now, but my line test looks better than it has in the past.

So this doesn't really affect cablemodems (which need to go out to the Internet), it is more for OnDemand and VOIP services correct?

Its actually for everything. The new network is more robust and allows greater capacity for all traffic.

I get that, but in pratcice how much does it really affect the modem service which currently is limitted to speeds of 6mbps or less. Will it make increasing speeds easier or allow more modems per node?

Sorry about that...
Comcast is just driving me nuts lately. Call and they give you the usuall line that nothing is wrong on thier end.

The last few days, I assume after the switch to CRAN, my connection has been shaky. Just for simple browsing, clicking a link will just sit there and give me a timeout error about 50% of the time.

I have run 3 line quality tests. The first one looks half decent. The second is horrible and the third is poor. In the third test, I made myself pingable.

You shouldn't be getting those dropouts within Comcast's network. Ask anyone who is on the CRAN (like myself and JeepMatt See Profile) and you will know that they haven't seen those issues.

I found that they put my area on CRAN sometime last week. However every friggin' time they work on switching an area over, I lose internet access totally (like now). Then it will mysteriously come back on its own. Meanwhile, thank goodness for Verizon DSL as a backup.
