Demarc

What is the demarc exactly?

The point in your house where the outside Bell Canada Wiring meets the inside house wiring. It is also the point Bell will check without charging you money.

A demarcation point is where the telephone company equipment stops and the customer's equipment starts. Over the years there have been many definitions put forth. Bell was going to install a demarc for each and every customer but found the cost would be prohibitive. Some people believe the demarc to be the telephone "protector" in the basement but this is not really a true demarc point as the customer cannot really do what is supposed to be done. At a proper demarc the customer should be able to unplug the inside wiring and plug in a single telephone to see whether the trouble is on the customer's wiring or beyond. The ideal demarc would be a single jack just past the "protector" (lightning protector) where the customer could unplug his inside wiring and plug in a single telephone to see if trouble still existed.

You shouldn't have to open anything with a tool, a proper customer demarc should be accessible via rj11 plug in access. You can call and request they install a proper demarc in your house...maybe after the work stoppage.

That's exactly how my demarcation point is. I can disconnect the house wiring and plug in a regular phone. It also made splitting the house wiring from the DSL line a lot easier.

That sure is a fancy looking de-marc. Can you imagine the cost to Bell if they had to install that in each and every home? Now that Voice over IP is coming the need for the de-marc comes into question...should they install it for the dsl line or wait until the fiber to the house is installed with a newer type of de-marc...complete with ethernet ports for your SS6300 type modem (wan port)...a dilemma to be sure.

Demarcs come in many flavours depending on the type of home and the age of the installation. In addition to the external box illustrated in the link upthread there are several varieties that are installed inside the house. In my townhouse, the demarc is just a small pushdown block. In older apartments there may be no official demarc into the unit. In newer ones there could be a jack on the wall near the electrical panel. And so on...

oh no, I have one of those boxes from the above post, but also another jack inside near the electrical box (its the closes jack to the demarc).

In my house, the black (see the thick black coax-looking cable?) comes into my basement, and hooks into a "punch down block". That cable comes into the house, and then it's stripped and connects to the stripped end of a RJ45 (ethernet) cable and into the block. Then, every phone jack drop comes down the demarc(I'd say that punchdown block is my demarc) and hooks right into it. So, every phone in the house is directly hooked up to the demarc.

Tis an easy setup to work with...

Hmmm in my fuse box, it looks like there is some gray box, and all the phone connections appear that they are going into it. Would that be the demarc?
