E-mail taking a dump?

I've noticed since last night that incoming e-mails are once again several hours delayed in arriving.

Is there some kind of POP server problem or something?

I noticed a change yesterday (29/03) in the DNS of hotmail/msn platform.. can it be the cause?

I've been having this problem for about 2 days now - some emails are not even coming in! It's getting kind of annoying. I don't know if I should be switching to the new MSN platform or not.

I was trying last night - can a different SMTP server be used instead of Bell's? I was trying this (using gmail) and it seems to not work using their SMTP server. I'm pretty sure Sympatico only wants us to use their SMTP servers - correct?

It's more than annoying, it's hidious. If they are having some sort of problem, they should announce it publically. They should compensate somehow for our loss. I just wish that there would be more competition, so that they have no choice but to clean-up their act. Dump Sympatico!

Secotton.. yup. port 25 are blocked.. so you must use sympatico smtp.. but.. with gmail.. its a SSL smtp on port 465 i think, so it work that one...

I call 310-SURF and it says that only the SMTP server is having problems. But I can't receive any emails either.

How many other people with sympatico can't receive just out of curiousity?

I haven't received anything since about 9:30 this morning. And even then that message was dated from yesterday.

I tried sending to my Sympatico address from a non-Sympatico address and it still hasn't arrived after four hours.

I've moved now to gmail for the SMTP of choice. And yes - gmail does use port 465 for SSL smtp.

Also - doesn't the SMTP server take care of both the incoming / outgoing emails? I think it is just that it sends the incoming emails into the little holding place for us to actually recieve the emails. I'm pretty sure this is how it works - so that would explain why emails don't go out and come in properly.

No SMTP doesn't take care of incoming email.

I thought what I've learned with email and sendmail stuff, is that when an email is sent, it goes to your local SMTP server. From there, if it's a local domain, it gets passed the the POP3 server, and if it's a remote address, it hands it to the remote SMTP server. This is when the SMTP server passes it to the POP3 mail server again.

sending email client --> SMTP --> SMTP --> POP3 --> recv. email client

Maybe I'm wrong on this one - but in some way - the SMTP server does handle both incoming and outgoing emails. It could be that it's a different server, and in this case - it too seems to be having difficulties with processing email at the moment.

All their MX records point to their own SMTPs. Unfortunately I can't telnet to them even though I am within Sympatico's network, I assume because they're only meant for receiving the mail.

I blame the bandwidth hogs for this! -we are now all forced to queue for mail server circuits- roll out the caps!

What do you think are those MX record entry servers? They're SMTP. Just so you don't know, MX=Mail Exchange.

Somebody outside of sympatico networks, could you try telnetting into one of those on port 25?
