Back in 2000 I would have never thought the price could ever come down to $19.99!
Back in 2000, we're paying $19.99 for a dial-up!

I was able to recruit another subscriber for this new rate, and I'll be glad to set it all up for them.

I just got my confirmation letter explaining my new rate, however, I am puzzled about this statement: "After your 12 months are up, you will be re-rated to the standard montly price of $39.95 per month for SBC Yahoo! DSL Starter or $49.95 per month for SBC Yahoo! DSL Express."

I have never paid that much. The first time I joined, it was 29.99 a month (I missed out on the 26.95 special by a day), then got the 26.95 month on my renewal date and now I am at the 19.95 a month plan after getting some great advice on this thread. Is this their standard pricing to show off their specials more? Or am I screwed again next year when I renew just because my I am now a May renewal subscriber (before I was Feb)?

I think they're just keeping their options open. When the contract ends the price will be the same or lower or we'll all switch to cable, or fiber, or Wi-Max, or whatever the deal-of-the-day is at that time.

Those are their month-by-months rate that apparently have been fixed at those levels since SBC DSL day one. They've always offered discounted (increasingly so recently) yearly contracts and probably will continue to do so unless some activist judge strikes down their $200 ETF clause.

Just remember to change your calender so that May is now your new contract end. If you are happy with the DSL service, you can re-up for another discounted contract a month or so beforehand. That way you avoid any possibility you will be paying those pricey mo-by-mo rates.

It doesn't matter what your renewal month is. As soon as a lower promo price comes out, you can ask for it, even if you had just re-upped for a year at a higher price. I've done this several times already.

I wonder if they'll still honor this with the new $14.95 plan?

I doubt it, the $19.95 deal is off the table. Give it a couple of weeks, and they'll probably honor the $14.95 price for existing customers too.

FYI:

I just called SBC this morning, and the lady renewed my contract at the 29.99 rate without any hassle at all.

I just said, "I noticed that my DSL contract has expired and I don't want to pay the month-to-month rate.", and she said okay I can renew your contract and re-rate you to the 29.99 per month price.

Sweeeeet.

So, the process is sound, it's just the details that keep changing....It seems better to wait for the $14.95 re-rate then reupping at $19.95 or higher right??

That depends. If your contract is about to end, call to re-up at whatever rate you can talk them into, whether that be $26.95 or $19.95. If you don't call prior to contract end, they'll put you on a month-to-month rate which is something like $49.95! You can always call back later and get whatever the current promo price is without waiting for end of contract.

I called this morning. I suggest a speakerphone/waiting a few days unless you don't mind being on hold for a LONG time. I was on hold from around 9AM to 9:35, said "If I do not get a rate reduction, I am considering dropping my DSL service. I'm looking at another offer" and friendly Janet put me on hold for retention. I waited from 9:37 to around 10:15 to reach someone who was not in retention, but who helped me. She was helpful and processed change order to the new price. I was done around 10:30.

That's why it pays to wait a few days or even a couple of weeks until all the "early adopters" along with the new subscribers are finished overloading the call centers with their requests after new pricing is announced.

I expect that within a week or so, all those 25 to 45 minute to 1+ hour wait times for the $14.95 re-rate will drop to something far more managable then they currently are now.

The deals not going anywhere anytime soon so all good things come to those who wait...

Bahh!! It took forever for me to get through to them. I think I'll wait awhile for the rush of new customer calls to subside. It's only a five dollar difference.

More like $60 (5x12) the way I calculated and that pays for my 2wire modem upgrade + the $99 credit. .

I meant a $5 different if I wait a month for things to die down.

Okay, can someone please break this down for me?

When did SBC first offer DSL at the $19.95 monthly rate *without* bundling it with long distance? Was it March 1st, 2005?

I'm just trying to understand for the sake of Anal Retentive Completeness how long the $19.95 (without LD service) deal lasted before they dropped the price even lower. It seems like three months, tops, but I'd appreciate it if someone who knows for sure could confirm this.

Man, I can't believe these price drops. I actually waited _5 years_ to get my DSL. I signed up recently because it *seemed* like a safe bet that the $19.95 price point would be around for a while, what with it being implemented so recently.

How wrong could I be?

Actually, I'm such a cheapa55 that the $19.95 price was a sticking point, too. What I mean is: $20 is still (gasp) *double* what I was paying for dialup. If SBC can grant me a re-rate to $14.95, I think even *I'll* be satisfied. And let me tell you, that's almost unheard of...

Huck Finn: It doesn't matter if you've only had the 19.95 price for a little while or not. Call the DSL Retention people & tell them you're considering switching to Comcast (and willing to accept the early termination fee) if they can't or won't re-rate you to the 14.95 price.

You'll get your new 1 year contract effective on the date they tell you the new price goes in to effect.

No need to crunch the numbers, just give them a call and Git 'R Done!!
