Can you explain what you mean by :
You have to get transfered to "DSL Retention" to get this, you may have to hint that you'll cancel to get transfered to the person that can actually re-rate.
I quite didn't understand all of that. Thanks for the tip.

| Re: $19.95 for *all* customers (no LD plan needed) Hi, Yesterday i checked into the lower price for the Pro plan. Called the number the site told me to call. Asked about getting re-rated. The person went and checked something or with someone, but when he returned, was told not possible.
I asked for the Retention number, called it and after about 5 mins reached a person. She re-rated me to the 29.99 price. Was on the 39.99 price.
She also told me to always call that number since I was a active DSL costumer, call for any SBC product or service.
If you want the number pls IM me. AS I am not sure how public the number should be.
Thanks. -- Tim | |

| said by vanman2 :explain where/how YOU got it? thanks,Van Hi Van, I called the normal number and reached a CSR, who also had to ask someone else, and still said I wasn't able to change the monthly cost.
I asked for the Retention number and was given 714-339-7529, after about 5 mins. I reached a nice person who was able to help me get the 29:99 rate.
I then asked if there was a toll free number, she gave me the 800-579-7861 (it's out of the bag now ). She asked what number I used and sounded a bit surprised that it worked. She told me to use the number she gave me.
And it seems a few of you have made good use of the number. So the few cents it cost me for the long distance call was well worth it.
Hope all that want to are able to re-rated. -- Tim

Just got off the phone (from above number) with a very good CSR in San Diego (named Joan) who was able to give me the 3 mb rate for 4 cents more than I pay now (29.95 ----> 29.99). No hassle, very polite, knew her stuff, etc. I asked her about DSL Retention and she said they ususally handle cancellations and that the number I called is the main DSL "headquarters" for SBC/PacBell.
This is a perfect case of having USA English speaking people who have been with the company for a while (she's been there 4 years) who know what they are doing. Renewing was easy and pleasant... they way it should be.

I was about to give up because no-one was picking up the phone in DSL retention for 20 minutes. I then recalled back and when I choose "change service" and I figured what the heck, I'll try if this person will re-rate me, (without going to DSL retention) To my surprise this kind person agreed to re-rate me on the spot.
A bit OT: When the person was updating my account we started chatting about other services, and the person mentioned SBC VoIP service to begin early 2006. Could this part of SBC's FTTN project?

Suggestions? Am I overly attatched to my IP? Do you use any software that requires the static IP address? That's what it comes down to. If you don't, then upgrading your speed while downgrading the cost would seem the best thing to do.
BUT!!!! you may also have a different type of connection that will require a new/replacement modem. Does your computer support PPPoE?
How long have you had this static IP?
You may need to reg. on the site, then make a request in the SBC Direct forum for a PreQual to see if you line will support 3M and if it will require any changes in equipment to work.
Either way, good luck. -- Tim

As a word of caution, when I first got DSL it was 1.5m/384 and my SMC router worked fine, when I move up to 3M speeds it was only letting me get around 1.8M and was locking up. I compared it with using the SMC router vrs WXP direct. Was losing almost 40%.
Bought a newer router and now get within 5% between using the router and straight WXP.

| Re: $19.95 for *all* customers (no LD plan needed) I just got re-rated at $19.95 (with a one-year commitment).
I called 800-579-7861, and asked to be transferred to customer retention, which they did.
I referred to the $19.95/month offer, stated that I had seen existing customers being offered in online postings, and asked to be switched to that rate. The customer retention rep said he could do that, evidently did data entry for 3 minutes or so, gave me an order confirmation number, and that was that. (I am currently paying $26.95 for DSL.)
Note that I do have an unlimited long-distance plan with SBC, but I do not have the all-distance plan.
Note also that I first made an earlier call in which I tried to get it through the normal CSR. The CSR said that I would only be eligible for the $29.95 speed upgrade offer, not the $19.95 rerating. I then asked to be switched to customer retention, and the rep said the same thing. I then asked to speak to a manager, but her manager was not available and would need to call me back. I said to do so. (Later, after I had gotten the $19.95 rate by calling back in, as explained above, the retention rep called back and said that her manager told her to offer me the $19.95 rate. I told her that I had already gotten it in the meantime, through another retention rep.)
All of this only took about 10-15 minutes, including both of my calls and the call-back from the manager.
I guess this is SBC's equivalent of the mail-in rebate. Jump through a few hoops, and you get your reward.

Sounds like a good time to do this myself.
said by Authority : Only the customer retention people are authorized to change the rate, not the first level customer service people. They don't automatically change your rate, you have to say something like "I was thinking of canceling my contract" or "I want to renew at the lower rate of $19.95 you're advertising". From what I was told this is wide oepn, they're not giving people a hard time, though if they get a flood of calls (as they should) that might change.

| Another datapoint: Just (2:20pm PDT Saturday) got off the phone with DSL Retention (I used the 800-579-7861 number, immediately asking to be transferred to Retention.)
First rep I got was insistent that since I was not a new subscriber there was no way to get the $19.95 rate without a LD package. She further insisted that she hadn't heard of anyone getting it.
I asked if I could speak with a supervisor. After about a minute on hold, the Supervisor came on, politely identified herself and said "May I ask you a question?" I said sure. She said, as if reading from a script, "If you do not get a rate reduction, are you considering dropping your DSL service?" Well, in truth it's too much of a hassle to save $90, so I replied, "Um, yes, I'm considering it. Uh, I have this brochure from Adelphia that says -- "
With that, she cut me off and apologized for the delay, saying she would be happy to tell the rep to give me the lower rate. She apologized again and transferred me back to the original rep, who gave me the lower rate for a year.

Spoke with a very nice woman who granted me the 29.99 rate for the PRO package after some haggling. She first told me that this rate was only available to existing customers *IF they also had the "All Distance" package, which I had. But then I told her I was going to be dropping the All Distance package soon so what would the rate change to? (I did not tell her it was because I am going to be using SunRocket VoIP) She said if I dropped the All Distance package, then if my account was audited, they would rerate me to the monthly rate of 59.99. I argued with her that this is unnacceptable since I am renewing a 1 year contract I do not want to be billed a month to month rate. I was very nice and told her that I did not mind keeping my 36.99 rate if I could drop All Distance. She then put me on hold to speak with her supervisor.
A few minutes later she told me she had authorization to give me the 29.99 regardless of whether I had All Distance or not. She said she made a note on my account including her supervisor's phone# that the 29.99 rate will be provided without All Distance. She then offered to remove the All Distance now, and I agreed.
So now I have a basic phone service with 29.99 Pro dsl package and Sunrocket VoIP service for 15.00 with 2 phone numbers and the full compliment of features = a full top of the line communications package for under $60 including taxes, etc. not bad. Cut $40 off my monthly bills.

| I called last week and got the rate on my first try! They said I will be glad to give you the lower rate. She put me on hold and when she came back confirm that the new rate would go in effect next pay cycle! $19.95!!! WOW! Back in 2000 I would have never thought the price could ever come down to $19.99! | |

I was able to recruit another subscriber for this new rate, and I'll be glad to set it all up for them. -- Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known - Carl Sagan
