| site survey
I am still looking for a new way to do site surveys. I'm pretty sure I know what I want to do. I'll try the handheld, pda version of a site survey rig.
Tell me a little about how this way works?
Can I hook a cat 5 cable from the PDA to my radio? So I can do the SS with the exact piece of equipment I plan to deploy?
I like dell, which one would be best? »www1.us.dell.com/content/product···en&s=bsd
Can you see these when your outside? |

1 edit | I use an old 3650 ipaq, pocket pc 2000 and intersil sitesurvey tool w/ pcmcia expansion sleve. I use seano card 200mw as I use cb3's for cpe. For those site surveys that require height, I use a 30' telescoping pole from lowes and 30' lmr-400. This works great for what I need to do. If I need to test throughput I pull out my laptop and hit my local NDT server.
I would check ebay, they always have older ipaqs and expansion sleves. |

| reply to wispman I do it to ways.
1) I have a Dlink DCF-660w that I modified for an external antenna, hook up the antenna and walk the roof or where ever you plan to install if I get a -90 or better signal I know everything will work fine.
2) I do have a CF NIC card for plugging directly into some of the radios with either pocket putty or web interface.
I use an Ipaq hx4705 now but was using a Toshiba 755 prior and a Toshiba 740 prior to that.

In that case you will need one of these:

I believe that this answers your question about plugging in the radio to the PDA. -- A is A |

| reply to wispman The reason I'm using the Ipaq hx4705 now is larger display. I use a Hawking CF nic card(no cables, just a one piece unit). Should work on most radios with telnet, ssh, or web interface. Will NOT work with Smart Bridge equip. because of the lack of all the above options not available. Hydro |

| reply to wispman Thats the same card as the Hawking just another name.
As far as the screens, go out and look at them in a computer store, you won't find the dells but plenty of others with the same screen. They can be hard to see some times but still easier to carry.

| reply to wispman I have a sub with one of the dells. I think I'll order the $30 CF ethernet adapter and try it out with his (if he'll let me) And if I like it, then I'll spend the money (i mean put it on the plastic with everything else ) for the PDA?
Anyone have anything against the Dell's I'm looking at? Are other brands better? Any input from handheld users would be helpful. As I have no experience. |

| reply to wispman I should add the reason I chose the hx4705 is the screen is larger, sometimes I like to put it in true vga mode for web based interface and things get pretty small in true vga mode, you can adjust some of the settings to help though, I also watch movies in bed with it and can't beat the hx4705 for that(the wife hates it).
They are kinda spendy but I got mine at SAMs club for $580.
There was some posts on a form about the dell x50 burning up the usb controllers on your computer, don't think that it was very common but did'nt read much into it.
