Vonage should let the VoIP run over port 80 for the connection set up, make it appear like HTTP traffic. Silly that this happens, but the VoIP business is going to have to get a bit creative, (now if a law is passed then there is not much that can be done legally). |

After reading this story, I went to go check out the Vonage forum thread about this Mexican VOIP issue...So I'm reading the rational replies from the Mexicans looking for help, and then stumble upon this "gem" of a response, FROM A 5-STAR VONAGE FORUM MEMBER:

On the original topic - I can see people flocking to the sat providers if these countries keep this up...

just to let everyone know, the problem with telmex customers is that their outbound audio to the people they call or the people that call them is extremely choppy, no matter which port the RTP packets are being sent across. the rtp packets appear to be deprioritized by Telmex, not outright blocked. telmex customers (as of now, at least) are still able to make and recieve calls, the quality is just awful. it was fine up until a few weeks ago, at least according to customer statements. |

You are correct, maybe he should check his facts - he might have exagerated a little by saying "millions". But by merely stating what his assumptions are should not be cause for alarm...

HTTP traffic, yes its port 80, but TCP port 80 while the protocols used for VoIP are UDP. Although UDP uses port numbers as well, the protocol is very different and is easily distinguishable from http port 80 traffic.
