[VONAGE] Anyone else having trouble

Just wanting to see if anyone else is having trouble with audio quality on their vonage service on insight (audio fade's away to nothing and comes back for both the caller and the callee on a somewhat regular interval) I have tested my network and insight's network and they looked ok...with the recent thread about possible BT throttling I'm hoping this isn't an insight throttling related issue...

I ordered Vonage this past weekend and should receive my equipment within the next day or so. I'll be sure to report if there's any issues with audio quality.

I'd say your best bet would be to have a look in the »VOIP Tech Chat forum. The past few months it seems many different companies have been having hiccups. Vonage seems to be experiencing some problems on a pretty consistent basis of late.

That said - your problem could be related to packet loss. I thought I had a little hiccup the other day when calling to confirm a reservation at a hotel. Many customer service call centers use VOIP. So my thought was the routing might have gotten goofed for a few seconds.

I don't use Vonage - I use another VOIP provider.

@insightBB.com
there is also a setting on the vonage page where you can adjust your bitrate... might try dropping the rate a bit ... could improve the connection

Im going to continue testing my network tonite...in over 2 years using Vonage Ive never had a problem quite like this...I was curious if anyone else was in the same boat but it sounds like it isnt a insight problem since I seem to be alone..The rate I have already adjusted down...I guess I'll just have to see what happens

I just saw your instant message. Keep in mind VOIP isn't a change that should be taken lightly. Definitely do some research in the VOIP forum linked above. Reading the forum FAQ there is definitely something new users should do. If your an inexperienced computer user. VOIP might not be an option that will make you happy. You can save a good amount of money though. And with the right provider you should have a quality experience.

To answer a few of the IM questions.

VOIP.net is a reseller of services from my provider. That means they resell the services of Broadvox Direct. If you buy directly from Broadvox Direct at this time. You would have to pay $29.95. Buying through the reseller VOIP.net you pay $19.95. I have no experience with that company. I bought my service directly from Broadvox Direct. I'm grandfathered in at the old $19.95 rate.

This thread is a good read

»[News] VOIP coming to Springfield

My blog post on the subject. Linked in that thread. Might be worth a read as well.

The best judge of speed for you ( if using an online speed test ). Would be here »chi.speakeasy.net/

This link »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64 ( this link is a direct link to a download ) is a good indicator of true speed. Using a real world download.

That link can always be found at my Insight bookmarks page.

Keep in mind the quality of your internet connection does effect your VOIP quality. Keep in mind that if the power fails or your internet services goes down. You will be without a phone. Unless you have what is called a UPS - which is a battery backup device. For when the power is out.

I have also had Vonage for a few months. I have not experienced one single problem yet! I have the 14.99 plan and my bill has not been over $17.00! A+ to vonage.

insight here in Rockford Illinois is the absolute worst ignorant ips ever i have for the past 2.5 months either dealing with 60-80% packet loss or near adsl speeds seems to alternate call tech support "We'll send a Tech out to test your line" No i tell them its your routers that IM routed thru "NO it cant be if it was our call volume for your area would be alot higher" no you don't understand not everyone is as picky and knowledgeable about internet as i am "Well IM sure the tech will fix your line" Well fine but when the tech comes ill give him the bad routers adresses maybe he is a bit smarter than some kid reading a computer screen the tech Comes Tests my lines and Gee Go Figure my line is flawless My Comp is flawless with the exception of Microsoft's software installed on it well here M.R tech guy heres the bad routers i detected on my scans and heres my logs "I don't know anything about that stuff ill have the supervisor contact you" that was a week ago No contact Hmmm and i have paid my service for 2 months but this month i am refusing to pay and am asking for a 2 month credit and if they refuse i will be taking them to small claims court with all the logs and so forth i am sure i will be reimbursed for the lack of service i have received and as soon as there is another cable provider i am done with insightbb they are garbage its funny tho as i have read tons of great reviews about them kinda sad really sorry for the lack of punctuation but its a rant after all

I can understand the frustration you have with your ISP, but is it for sure their routers that are causing the problem? I'm not doubting the information you might have, or even your technical expertise (I'm no expert here), but just curious as to why you believe the routing issue is with your ISP.

I could be mistaken (and I'm sure I'll be corrected), but I thought the ISP was only responsible for the route your data takes to/from them, not the route the data takes once it leaves them.

Like I said, I'm no expert, but thought I'd throw that out there.

and for new guy Your isp is responsible for all data on your subnet all the bad routers are either owned or leased by insightbb so if i do a loss scan and an at&t router is returning bad data then its my isp's responsibility to inform at&t of this and get it fixed as i am just an end user at&t needs the leaser to contact them regarding the problem they wont release info to an end user such as myself well as of recent i have only been getting 5% loss on average which is fine in my book not to many drops but still have a bad router on my subnet but seems to be 100% better then the past few months which is a good thing now i can use my Internets capabilities
