Insight refuses to install service

A friend moved into a rented townhouse and had cable installed. They refused to put an outlet upstairs. Later she called to get internet service and they also refused to put an outlet upstairs where the computer is. Their service really sucks. I think everybody should go to dish network.

Anyways, I found the cable inside the wall upstairs that comes into the townhouse from the roof. If I cut this cable and split it 4 ways (1 downstairs + 3 upstairs) will the signal have enough strength for a cable modem? Also would she get in trouble if I did this?

Thanks.

No I went through this run around with insight when I lived in an apartment. They wont do an AO in rented properties even with permission from the land lord. It's ridiculous, especially when you have an insight tech at your house saying there has to be an AO to get the service to work correctly.

$20 cash will go a long way in "bending" some rules and regulations.

»Corporate policy for AOs in apartments.

That thread will explain most of the pros and cons involved. Hope that helps some.

if the apt. is prewired they won't install anymore outlets. or if it is a condo. go from a 2 way to a 3 way if you can. so you have less return loss.

Okay, I've decided to install the AOs myself. The mild investment for the RG6 cable, compression connectors, and tools will be worth it since I always seem to run into these situations. I guess I could start charging friends and family a modest service fee.

I'm going with the professional grade tools, splitters, and SNS fittings. I'm wondering whether to go with the RG6 dual or quad shielded cable. Any input? Which does Insight use?

Dual would be just fine. Ya don't really need quad inside.

Note to cableguy : just remember that as forward signal decreases thru a splitter, the return signal inceases.

Actually when the return signal hits the splitter, theres a loss again. Its not splitting of the signal itself, its the loss through the splitter itself. You lose the same both ways.

OK I finally did the outlets upstairs in the townhouse. There was a "bundle" of cable in the small hole I made in the wall.

POTENTIAL PROBLEM: I accidentally cut the cable that fed the townhouse next door. I put it back together with snap 'n seal connectors and joined the two with a barrel connector. But first, I hooked a TV to the barrel connector to test it -- all channels were clear.

Will this "patch" be problem-free from RFI/EMI?

P.S. I removed the test TV from the neighbor's feed before stuffing it back into the wall.

edited: clarified the details

Some people would probably seize the opportunity to steal service.
