| Re: Extract shows from DVR? Let us know how you get along. I've asked but I don't think it has ever been answered. If it would be possible to hook up the box wirelessly and access it as a type of share drive. I really don't want to have to buy a ton of extra stuff just to get to a few files. I have 2 shows I'd really like to archive.

| Re: Extract shows from DVR? Good information. But again this would entail me to have to make a hardware investment. Not everyone has a laptop, firewire or an extra drive lying around. And so far all the solutions seem to point to having a one part of that or a combination of those. It would nice if "content" providers would be a little less paranoid and allow hardware manufactures to provide a truly customer friendly device. Yes I know this is a pipe dream of mine.

So even though I'm making the suggestion. Don't pawn the issue off on me.:D I'm behind enough in the things I need to do.
I still would like to see an option to hook something like an Xbox / Playstation wireless adapter to the box and to be able to access it's contents that way.
I've been thinking of breaking down and getting a hardrive enclosure with Firewire and going that router though.

| So channels like ABC on the Insight motorolla box won't allow you to record the HD (such an episode of LOST from their digital channel), but they will let you record the analog version of the same program from the ABC analog channel? By 'record' I mean able to extract via firewire off the box to your PC and store on a harddrive. That's BS if you can't extract the HD to your PC because of fair use rights. I read somewhere that the firewire ports must be enabled to allow consumers to record tv programs, at least for the network channels like ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, WB and UPN. If Insight is not allowing you to record the HD channel versions to your PC (or in the case of the law.. your digital VCR(DVHS)) I think they are not following what had been established for fair rights use. Sure they can point out that you can record their analog programs and offload to your PC or DVHS deck, but you're losing out in the quality as it would only be standard definition.
I don't use Insight for TV service. I use a combination of an off-the-air HD tuner/capture card called MyHD MDP-120 and a home theater PC as well as Dish Network with an old Dishplayer 7100 DVR.
If Insight is preventing the recording of HD programs to PC or DVHS, you could possibly get around it with the new MyHD model MDP130 card. It just came out recently and is suppossed to be able to record HD off cable (QAM):

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has an MDP130 and how well it works with Insight for HD capture. I am in a situation where our digital FOX station off the air puts out a signal that isn't entirely stable due to being on low band VHF 9in my area anyway). At times it would be so much easier for me to switch to Insight for FOX-HD than to put up with the unstable FOX signal OTA and monkeying with my antenna. I like to archive alot of what I watch. (HD quality > DVD quality). I have captured LOST entirely in HD (burnt to DVDR discs). I think this is what media companies and providers are afraid of... people like me that won't buy the DVD sets when the quality in HD is superior off the air and free. I still buy DVDs if the extras are compelling enough, but I think this is one of their greatest concerns.
Hopefully I am wrong about Insight not allowing extraction of material from the HD network channels (I can understand channels like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, etc being protected). | |

| Re: Extract shows from DVR? It got tossed. But in many cases the technology is all ready in place. So who is to say that cable companies and other providers won't put this into use. I may be wrong but I thought a few loop holes still existed.
And just because a district court ( I may the type of court wrong - I'm not looking at the news information on this right now ) decided this was an overstep of the FCC powers. This doesn't mean that content producers can't go to Congress and ask for legislation to be past to get what they want.
