DSL's better, read on.

DSL when handled right IMO is the better technology because of it's "dedicated" nature. There are fewer potential bottlenecks on a DSL network than on a cable network. Cable has the CMTS, nodes and god knows whatelse. Thing is, there's no "port" limit on those things so the Co's can just keep packing customers on.

DSL doens't allow for that because there are port limits on the DSLAMSs, so obersubscribing - hardware wise - isn't possible.

AFAIK Cable Co's run fibre all the way up o their nodes, then use coax for "the last mile" to the user. If The Bells ran fibre to a neighbourhood DSLAM then ran copper for "the last mile" they'd definately have the stronger network.

I think the bigest reason why dsl is not in the lead is because of the amount of people who still cant get dsl but can get cable. Ive been wanting dsl ever since i got broadband back in 2000. Still waiting for bellsouth.

I gave up on DSL for my home 5 years ago when I used an SDSL service but Verizon eventually told me the lines in my Street (they are underground)are disintegrating and the copper needs replacing. (Verizon also told me they wee a Voice company and NOT a Data company!). Well 5 years on they still try to sell me services over the same copper. Now I use Cable Broadband and VoIP.

You really need to read up on how HFC networks actually work. A node is a transparent device in the network, it does nothing to prohibit bandwidth. The cable systems do have a "port" limit. There are only a certain amount of subscribers that can be put on the line cards(which is the cause of the speed issues, but people think it's a node). Each CMTS is able to hold a certain amount of those cards. Same with DSL. Also, DSL does have sharing issues similar to cable when it comes to subs on a remote terminal. If the telco builds a small RT thinking not many will get DSL it can easily become saturated, it happened to a friend of mine, and SBC had no plans on bringing a bigger pipe to that RT, so he was out of luck.

And yes, both DSL and cable companies do oversubscribe, that is how all ISPs work, it's just a matter of how well they are managed as to how bad the network gets messed up.

If you want to get down to which has a stronger potential network, cable wins hands down. With the possibility of adding additional data channels, cable is far more scalable than the current DSL networks could ever be.

Maybe the potential is there, but in my neck of the woods, DSL doesn't even compete! I used to have DSL but their speeds were so dismal . . . they've gotten a bit better, but Comcast blows them away! I look forward to the day when DSL (in my area) gets back in the race!

Well I look at Cable/DSL in "My" area and concluded cable spanked DSL.

DSL at the time I made the switch dropped to 450kbps from an all time high of 1350kbps. The only factor was time of day. Apparently BS in Merritt Is, FL had a rinkie dinkie pipe leaving the area(the CO Switch to the Internet world) and from around 5:00pm to midnight or a bit later the speed sucked. Did they fix it? Good question, and I don't care.
Price for that crappy service: $54.95(taxes & all).

Switched to cable and my DL Speed never during any part of the day dropped below 2150kbps and since the free speed upgrade the 1st of Feb., doesn't go below 4000kbps(usually 4400-4800).
Price: $44.95(total cost, either no taxes or embedded in the cost)

I've also had the experience of playing, who's problem is it with the Bell.

DSL = Problematic
If a problem exist it could be an issue on any part of your wires anywhere from the house wiring all the way to the CO or the DSlam, whatever your line is hooked up to, getting it to the stinger.

Cable = Systematic
Usually if it's down, something in the system is down. Hmm turn on the cable TV and see if it's running. I don't have to think it's my wiring in the house if I have good channel reception on the TV from the cable.

A little OT:
Don't know if you are using RR or Earthlink, but if the latter, it would be $41.95.
