Did u ask for DSL Retention? I think simply asking for em, not even necessarily being transferred to em is enough.

Try again. You don't need the DSL retention department. Some techs just don't know that you don't need the all distance package any more.

Well i figured, with the level of phone usage in our family we needed the long distance plan. She lowered my internet servie to 19.95 and added the LD plan. I figure if i end up paying higher than our norman bill i'll cancell the Ld plan hoping the canceling wont affect the re-rated internet service. Do you think they'll touch the re-rated price if i cancel the ld package later?

Yes, I think they will. Your deal with the bundled all-distance is effective only as long as you maintain the all-distance plan. If you decide to cancel the all-distance plan, your price will go back up to the standard rate. At that time you can try to negotiate for the best current deal, but they won't automatically keep your DSL at the rate you have.

Bummer .. I'm too far out from the CO to get the Pro Package but I did get the Express Package re-rated to $20 with a one year contract extension.

The tech ( Wendy, who was very pleasant ) said I would only be able to get the re-rate if I added a LD plan then said she'd check if there are any other offers I qualify for. Then a few minutes later she comes back on and says the Express package was re-rated to $20 effective April 4th. I asked her if she added any LD services and she cheerfully said NO.

Then she told me about some Cingular wireless deal for my cell phone which I'll probably check out when my contract with AT&T runs out.

Took less than 10 minutes on the phone and now I'm saving $120 over the course of the year.

:D

I'm confused. What number are you folks calling to get them to give you the higher speed (3mb) for $29.95. I've got the 1.5 service at that price.

Is it the number on this SBC promo site:

Thanks,
Al

What I did is have them transfer me over to the DSL Retention Department. If they balk, be very insistant. Hell, threaten that you will cancel DSL unless you get the Retention Department. Good luck.

I have tried twice so far with no luck. Both times they keep telling me I need to get the long distance package. Once was regular billing the other was retention.

I originally tried to upgrade to the Pro package for 29.99 and that would have been no problem but I am too far away.

I called about a week ago and the rep told me that i qualified for the Pro but that i needed to be reconnected to an RT. So my DSL will be down for 2 weeks while the disconnect me from the CO. and move me to an RT. Hopefully this will work. If not thean I guess I just renewed my contract at no additional benifit to me (i.e no greater speed and no lower rate.)

I've also tried re-rating my fathers connection at his office but they said that its a business line and that he can't get that rate. but he's gotten 29.99 before and now they want to charge him 36.99.

i've also been trying to get these rates for my friends but i keep getting put on hold and i only have 2 days left!

I was able to receive the PRO package at the 29.95 rate without a disconnect. I have a static IP and connection to the CO.
I'd say call again and again until you're sure thats the deal..
I have had DSL here since 1999, so I have a static IP and connection to the CO. I called once 4-5 weeks ago when I first heard of the new rates. (I dont stay on top of these things) And the CSR said I would have to be disconnected and reconnected to an RT. I didnt really want to do that...
I then called again 2 weeks ago and spoke to a rep that went and checked at my request to verify if I had to disconnect or not, while I waited on hold. She came back and said she spoke with "Maintenance" and said that due to my distance (or closeness) to the CO they could just re-rate me.
I also complained LOULDLY that I had been a customer since 1999 and had never been offered the new lower rate.
Everything has gone pretty well so far. I never experienced an outage and after some tweaking thanks to the telco reps here, my speeds are in the 2400's and I'm paying about HALF what I was.
Hope that helps.
James

I think it's unusual that they let you keep your original static IP at the new rate.

As do I. Mind you I did make a "stink" somewhat. Not that I have any need for the static IP. I don't run any servers etc.. That's just how they did it back in the 90's I just didnt want to suffer a 1-2 week downtime to get a faster speed. So I called again, which is always a good idea when dealing with a customer service issue like this with large Call Centers.

I was very reluctant to switch plans at all. The first rep I spoke with, said in order to move from standard to Pro I HAD to disconnect / reconnect. No matter what.

Or I could go to the same speed I had at the 19.95 rate with just a ReRate. I was kinda upset mind you as I have been paying $49.95 for 6 years to get 768 dsl. AND I happen to have the ALL Long Distance plan wiht them too! (Or whatever it's called)
So I was really hoping to get a faster connection if I was going to go through the hassle of calling and dealing with it.
The rep I finally spoke with was very very nice and helpful, Her name was Cecilia in Riverside.

The first CSR said yes they did have to do that. And that required a disconnect/reconnect. I ended up not having to change anything. As I am still on the Static IP and connected to my CO.
BTW, when I did call, I followed the instructions posted elsewhere here as to the actual phone number and menu entries to get to DSL retention. Look around in this forum and you'll find it. It seemed like the most direct route.

I just used the link you posted and managed to get the same rate too. I just had signed up for Express last month too

olddialup

@poak.hawkcommunicati

I currently use dialup, and am fairly happy with the
speed, but faster is better. I have one PC: 98SE.
So, I do not need a network.
And, am considering the $19.95/mo SBC DSL since it is
about the same price as my extra phone line and ISP.

1. The basic package ($99) is a modem only. For $149,
you get a wireless router. I wonder if I really need
the wireless router:
a. I have ZA (free version), which is blocking ports.
b. I will not use the wireless capability, and do not
want to accidentally turn it on and create a security
problem.
c. I understand that some modems do NAT, which provides
firewall security, right? I wonder if the SBC supplied
modem does NAT?
On the other hand:
a. There could be a vulnerability when
I reboot (before ZA starts running), using modem.
