Re: Rumor: SBC lowering prices

I'm another guy that has had SBC for a long time now, with the static IP. They've always let me keep it everytime I renew. I called and asked for a re-rate/upgrade to the Pro package this time. It went through without a hitch. I forgot to ask if there would be any problems because I have one of the old static IP accounts. They didn't ask me and I'm not sure if they checked that aspect or not. The lady I spoke with said my DSL wouldn't even go down through the upgrade process.

What are they going to do if by chance they missed this fact? I really hope they don't call me back and say I can't get the upgrade without switching to the dynamic IP setup. I have the Alcatel 1000 modem and I think I'm pretty far from the CO, since last year they said I was too far to get the faster DSL.

Hmm... That's funny.

If I were you, I'd grab the $19.95 deal. It's hardly more than dialup and once you have it, you won't want to go back.

In your situation, I'd get the modem-only basic package. The SpeedStream 5100b is very nice and you can always add a router later if you need it. This modem does NAT but is not a real firewall and it is not a router. There is no stateful packet inspection that you would find in a full-fledged hardware firewall. You will probably want to keep your software firewall if you are happy with it.

I believe the current deal may be ending soon. It's actually $1 over wholesale and I think it is about the best deal SBC has ever offered to consumers.

They need to put me on an RT for the Pro package. I was disconnected on March 28th and they called yesterday to notify me that it wasn't completed yet, but the CSR was going to call me today again to update me on the status.

If it turns out that my home wiring (old wiring) can't handle the speeds, how much does it cost to re-wire your house and does SBC do it? BTW i have DSL on a Splitter at my house, does that help?

thanks!

Well, I couldn't pass this deal up. I've been paying $60 a month for cable with great speeds, 4040kbps down, 330 up, but for $40 less a month I can live with slower speeds. I'm about 1000' from the CO so I expect close to 1500kbps.
I haven't received my package yet, but someone came by today to check the connection at the drop.
I don't have long distance with SBC, I get long distance free with my cell phone.

First find your 3 digit code on your telephone bill.
Call 1-877-722-3755
Say Yes if you are calling from home or Say No and punch in your dsl phone number
Say Billing
Say Change Service
Tell this live person to transfer you to DSL Retention
Tell this person you wanna rerate to 19.95 with no "all distance plan" They will need your name on bill and the 3 digit code.
They will start typing for about 5 minutes and then your done.

Worked for me, at first I was told that it's only for new customers, or existing customers on the "All Distance" plan. I was also told that their system wouldn't allow them to change the rate. However, after I mentioned that I had two cable providers that offered HS internet, the CSR did me a "favor" and "tried" to enter it in the system. By some miracle it worked

Your sync speed will be 1536 kbps. Factoring in the 15% loss due to overhead, the best you'll see is 1305 kbps throughput. Since you're used to cable speeds, I'm surprised you didn't go for SBC's 3.0Mbps plan for $29.99.

Thanks for all the information posted here in the past six weeks or so. It's just what I came to find, and tomorrow, I'll call and get my $49.95 fee reduced to $19.95 (fingers crossed)...as it was last year.
But here's my question: I've had SBC pacbell.net since 1999 or 2000 and never upgraded to the Yahoo connection. Does that make any difference?

Well now this is very odd and inconsistency with "customer service dept. or whoever takes renewals and new orders. I was one who tried to renew the Pro at 29.99 and got it. The person who took my renewal "existing customers" may qualify if they are willing to renew for another year from the date the renewal takes place. They were concern with keeping existing customers happy and providing "EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE"..... go figure.....

With that promotion, the fine print did read new and existing customers qualify. It's unfortunate that SBC can not remain consistent in their policy regarding existing customers regarding renewals.

It doesn't make a difference if you haven't upgraded to Yahoo. Lots of us have never migrated and have changed speed plans/prices over the years.

What would make a difference is if you had a grandfathered static IP. Sometimes changing speed plans (or rates) will cause a loss of the IP is not done correctly by the CSR.

I never upgraded to the Yahoo connection & still have my @pacbell.net address. I never upgraded because I didn't feel that extra software they was giving out was needed with my set-up.....
Don't want or need a lot of thing running in the background or did I want to use there browser.....

To Vihana See Profile: you don't need to install that bloatware. I installed the Enternet 300 to a friend of mine's PC, and he hasn't had any problems. I even told him not to install that other crap. As for me, I use a wireless router that does the PPPoE.

Thanks d_l, pa555, and Boricua65.
I called and it went fine after some hold time. But I just kept my headphones on and did other things until the agent decided to answer. Then she cheerfully rerated my monthly charge to $19.95 for another year.
And I can continue to proclaim: I will never accept that SBC Yahoo big brother crap.
