Me too. I just talked to the DSL retention department and was told I had to disconnect my existing service and then subscribe as a new customer to get the new rate. However this could change if enough people complain.

This really sucks!

I think howardlee888 is expressing disappointment that he just renewed, prior to this change. I don't think he's saying he renewed at the lower price.

Plus, as we've already seen, there's no reason for him to be unhappy because he wouldn't have been able to get the lower price when he renewed anyway.

Its not a rumor ... its official. SBC YAHOO DSL is $19.95 for NEW customers only. Valid only if you order between 03/01/05 and 03/31/05. I guess existing customers are screwed. That really sux, and its reallly discrimination against loyal customers, because we ordered first and we need to be given the discounted price first, BEFORE new customers who are just joining in.

This comes up over at sonic.net sometimes.

The deep discount price is a loss leader. They don't make money, but they get a customer. A customer who will hopefully pay a price they can make money on after a year.

If they "retain" customers by loosing more money on them, well that just can't work.

Anyway, you can always vote with your wallet. I'm willing to pay sonic's non-promo rate because they actually provide good service... so the value is there.

I agree that Sonic provides excellent service. But I think you can usually get the promo rate from Sonic if you ask for it and agree to a new contract, even if you are an existing customer. They don't want customers dropping service just to get somebody else's introductory rate. Or drop service just so they can sign back up at the introductory rate. It never hurts to ask.

Yep (sonic promo rate) but at least for those of us on the 6M plan, going back to promo only saves you $5/mo, and after that 12 month term actually ends up costing more then the $69/mo you'd be at anyway. So it's either drop static IPs to save a bit, or stay. I'm happy to stay - it's a lot cheaper then SBC's 5 sticky static pppoe 6M service.

Anyway, I don't think we've seen a new much faster, much cheaper DSL service since the 6M/608k deal last year. May have to wait a bit... if it ever does come, I'll be on it too.

Well, What I dont get is why people didn't try ordering through BestBuy? it would have (still does!) cost you 26.99 but you would get 100 bucks from bestbuy.

The only difference is that you would have to mail rebates for them modem vs. having it deducted automatically through SBC ordering.

But now that the 19.99 pricing is in place there is little point in going through bestbuy and getting involved in the whole rebate process. SBC is really killing their affliates and well honestly they couldn't afford to offer this through affiliates anyways, since it won't be very cost effective.

I'm glad I waited to order when I saw the 19.99 I thought it's probably a sales a gimmick and went through the entire fine print but nope, its 19.99 + the line recovery charge alright Order it while you can.

No, Payam81 is right. BestBuy's $26.95 plan was the Express plan, Pro was $36.95. The interesting thing is that right now BB isn't showing any SBC plans if you enter your information in their qualification system. I wonder if that means they're changing their rates to coincide with the new SBC plan?

Well now this is very odd and inconsistency with "customer service dept. or whoever takes renewals and new orders. I was one who tried to renew the Pro at 29.99 and got it. The person who took my renewal "existing customers" may qualify if they are willing to renew for another year from the date the renewal takes place. They were concern with keeping existing customers happy and providing "EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE"..... go figure.....

With that promotion, the fine print did read new and existing customers qualify. It's unfortunate that SBC can not remain consistent in their policy regarding existing customers regarding renewals.

Call 1-877-722-3755; select "order products & services"; ask to speak with the "DSL retention department."

I have 1.5Mbps DSL at $26.95 and wanted to see if I could upgrade to 3.0 Mbps at $29.95. Retention said, 'no problem'. Also was advised that upgraders can get a $99.99 credit towards a new modem, either the $149.99 wireless 2Wire or the $99.95 standard model. I already have a wireless network, so I chose the latter; shipping cost is $12.95. BTW, I do not have SBC's LD package, but use an alternate LD provider. ETA of the speed increase is one week.

Just called demanding for DSL Retention, and I got it
1.5 @ 26.95 to be rerated at 3/512 @ 29.99, effective on the 15th of March, and renewed contract for one whole year.

For those of you who recently upgraded from 1.5M to 3.0M, how long before you saw the increased download speed? My upload speed went up almost immediately, from 320k before to 440k now, but there has been no change in download speed. I've been power-cycling my modem every day for the past 5 days.

I see that you posted in SBC Direct, cool.
My download speed increased on the scheduled day (March 14), before I got a reply through SBC Direct. I'm enjoying 2400/440 kbps now!

Perhaps I was overexcited and said "Express" the day of the order, as my order showed up as "up to 1536" only. I called in today again, and I'll be placed on the Pro package with a new due date of Mar 22nd.

My fault... my fault... Either way, DSL Retention was very quick and helpful! Less than 30 seconds of Hold at 8AM in the morning

Do you have the JustCall 60, 120 etc (with monthly charge) or just the JustCall (with no monthly charge) ?
I have no idea what "JustCall" is. SBC provides my local service (unlimited) for about $16.50 per month, all fees and taxes included. I use a third party (PioneerTelephone.com) for LD and 'local' toll calls.

I doubt BestBuy would match SBC's 19.99 offer. As it's been said in this thread that is a limited time price only through SBC portal.

Oh and I just got my confirmation email which says the modem kit will ship through UPS and will be here in 5-6 days. They gave me my activation date too so I think my order is done. Took 'em about 2 days to process it! Not bad.

No, I was talking about an additional $75 rebate that BB was giving. All of the third party resellers give the modem rebate but some will give a portion of their kickback in addition to that.

For example, Dell is giving currently offering the free modem, three free months of service and a $50 rebate. A few weeks ago it was $75 instead of $50.

Say Billing
Say Change Service
Tell this live person to transfer you to DSL Retention
Tell this person you wanna rerate to 19.95 with no "all distance plan" They will need your name on bill and the 3 digit code.
They will start typing for about 5 minutes and then your done.

the csr from retention also mentioned offering higher speed access(3.5Mb at the minimum) in the next 6 months or so at very competitive prices.

You should have said "Please connect me to the DSL Retention Department; I need to speak with them about that." Sales was trying to make it difficult for you. Try again and good luck.

Just demand to speak with the DSL Retention Department. If they ask why, say, "Only the DSL Retention Department can rerate me at the lower price." That's what I did. The first tech was very nice. he was from the Billing Department. He transfered me over to DSL Retention very quickly.

I probably would have been scared and hung up too. I say go back and stand up to the Bully and say "Yes I do, now please transfer me to the DSL retention department so I can discuss this with them" or what the others say or whatever you comfortable with. In my opinion there is a difference between cancelling their service and rerating. Just make sure they don't bundle you with other services and for peace of mind you can say something like, 'just want to make sure - there's no cancellation fee because I'm not cancelling, just rerating (maintaining service but at a new rate), right?' or not as it seems appropriate. Good Luck.
Me, I got the 12 months for 26.95 thru BestBuy along with a $100 gift card (6 months now) so I'm kinda at that rate so waiting to see what all is going to come up in next 6 months. Thanks guys for sharing these helpful guides.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Last year I changed to DSL Pro package for $39.99 month & renewed a one year contract that is up April 8th.

Just called DSL Retention like you all said & with no problems at all I got the same DSL Pro package for $29.99 month with a renewed one year contract.

I did lol. He can't get me on the new Pro price. I called DSL Retention a week ago and they said fine. Now, one day before the deadline, Toaster tells me the only order on my line is nothing I may have to call DSL Retention again tomorrow if nothing happens.

Toaster is trying though thats one good thing

Following the advice in this forum I called DSLR and was rerated to $19.95. My confirmation letter arrived yesterday and in it was language to the effect of, "the rate is valid as long you maintain all required All Distance components." Neither I nor the agent ever mentioned All Distance at any time during my call to rerate so this has my perplexed and a bit concerned. Anyone know the details on this?

Don't worry about it. It's the only form letter they have for that rate, and it was sent just to give you confirmation of the rate change.

The wording maybe a little different in yours....

Wow - took me only 5 minutes. Thanks for the steps.

I was seriously considering Comcast HSI with their latest deal. I'd put the numbers in a spreadsheet for Comcast + Vonage vs. SBC, and Comcast was $125 cheaper.

But then I came here and read about this latest deal. At $10/month chepaer, the Comcast deal was only better by $5 for the year - definitely not worth the switch away from my currently highly-reliable DSL.

vonage is expensive. me and my friends use www.lingo. it's just as good and cheaper.

I just called the billing department and not the Retention department and they gave me Pro for $30 without the all distance plan. I don't even think you need to get to the Retention department anymore.

just thought I'd add to the general FYI
I called the # that came in the pamphlet:
1-8000-793-4713 and spoke with a rep almost immediately.
I was previously paying for 39.95 for DSL deluxe.
I went and asked for the new price of 29.99 and when I asked for the price without the "all distance" (vm long distance etc on the land line) it was cheerfully offered.
The whole process took about the same amount of time it took me to compose this post!

I currently use dialup, and am fairly happy with the
speed, but faster is better. I have one PC: 98SE.
So, I do not need a network.
And, am considering the $19.95/mo SBC DSL since it is
about the same price as my extra phone line and ISP.

1. The basic package ($99) is a modem only. For $149,
you get a wireless router. I wonder if I really need
the wireless router:
a. I have ZA (free version), which is blocking ports.
b. I will not use the wireless capability, and do not
want to accidentally turn it on and create a security
problem.
c. I understand that some modems do NAT, which provides
firewall security, right? I wonder if the SBC supplied
modem does NAT?
On the other hand:
a. There could be a vulnerability when
I reboot (before ZA starts running), using modem.

If I were you, I'd grab the $19.95 deal. It's hardly more than dialup and once you have it, you won't want to go back.

In your situation, I'd get the modem-only basic package. The SpeedStream 5100b is very nice and you can always add a router later if you need it. This modem does NAT but is not a real firewall and it is not a router. There is no stateful packet inspection that you would find in a full-fledged hardware firewall. You will probably want to keep your software firewall if you are happy with it.

I believe the current deal may be ending soon. It's actually $1 over wholesale and I think it is about the best deal SBC has ever offered to consumers.

I have been able to confirm that existing customers on a lower package than Pro should now be able to upgrade to current promo via normal channels at this time, as long as the line qualifies for an upgrade. There should be No need to ask for retention on Upgrades to Pro to get onto this promo.

Regarding Re-rates if you already have Pro, I still have no clear direction on that other than The promo is not Supposed To Be available to existing Pro customers.

Upgrade OK, New Customer OK, existing Pro Customer Currently not OK for the current promo.

I've got the 5-static IP residential service (month to month). I'm going to get rid of it because I can run my server somewhere else (still w/ SBC though) and have been considering the Pro package. I saw on the SBC website that if you sign-up you can get a $99 credit towards various items. If I already have DSL service, but want to sign up for the year contract at the 29.99, do I still get the $99 credit to apply towards the hardware?

Well, seems like I am going to have to start mentioning this site to EPC folks in other conversation again. Of the 3 reps I knew who posted here for things like this, 2 have since left the company and the other does not spend much time here anymore.

No catch. You will have to agree to one year contract though. Upgrading does not count as termination so nothing to worry about there.

They aren't suppose to bundle the All Distance/Long Distance bundle with the service but you can always ask to make sure.

Ok, I just called via DSL Retention and got the DSL Pro rerated to 29.99 from the 39.99! He also reduced my phone bill for 6 months! I had upgraded last June to Pro for the $39/month for one year, and now its lower again...ok I like this.
