| OOL Throttling D/L's NOW (Dirty New Tactic)
It seems that Cablevision is now resorting to the disgraceful practice of throttling the connections of users who download from any outside usenet premium (read: PAID EXTRA FOR because OOL's NNTP stinks) provider. I'm sure you've already seen the some of the threads with complaints in them already.
It seems to work as follows.
You start a download session from your favorite NSP, and without fail, somewhere between the 10th and the 11th minute of your full-speed (say around 7 or 8 Mbps) download, your connection rate gets throttled down to around 2.5Mbps, TOTAL. It seems to remain that way for quite some time, specifcally what, I haven't bothered to check.
At this point, not only are your news d/l's slowed to that useless rate, but your entire connection is throttled to that rate. Any http downloads, any ftp download (including to ftp1.optonline.net)-- ALL CRIPPLED.
I don't have any evidence whether or not this is across the board system-wide, but you can see that many areas, inluding where I have service in Brooklyn, are affected.
SO- Where does all the crap end? What's next? What will users bend-over and accept next? HTTP throttles? VOIP throttles?
I have determined that the throttle does not kick in if one were to only download from http sources. I'd assume the same goes for ftp sources, but I don't know.
I challenge any Cablevision rep (Engineer88 how about you?) to refute this. If I am wrong, I will be the first to admit, but come on.
Who here has ever heard of, or can even imagine some type, any type of system malfunction, or failure, manifesting itself, in such a contrived, and precisely timed manner. Not to mention the fact that it affects only a CERTAIN TYPE of network traffic.
This STINKS/REAKS of traffic shaping all the way. |

| Maybe this would explain why my connection speeds go to shit and pings to the gateway spike like hell at night especially. -- Its not about what you do, Its about HOW you do it |

@mindspring.com
| During a throttle while you are downloading using up your full 2.5 Mbps, your pings to the gateway will be $h1t. If you stop your usenet d/l, your pings will be fine although your connection rate will be throttled at 2.5 Mbps but since you are not using it at that moment, your pings will be normal.
Remember, your gateway pings will always be $h1t when you are using your full bandwidth spectrum, no matter what your bandwidth capacity is (10 Mbps or 2.5 Mbps). |

@optonline.net | I'm almost sure this is happening, if it is, then, what is the point of having 10 mbit if you can't use it?
I'M SO SWITCHING TO FIOS |

| reply to OOLhome That would explain on ALOT of my part, I do an EXTREMELY high amount of downloading, haven't for over a week and now I have my 9MB or higher download speed back. The most I was able to download was like 200KB the most and my upload speed was still at 116KB, the upload part was never affected. So this thread makes alot of sense to me on how come my downloads speed SUCKED!! Now it is time for me to sound like a broken record and say.... FIOS!!! WHERE R U!?!?!? |

Actually, no one is getting capped. They are getting throttled. Hence why it is not in the capping thread.
Thanks for playing. |

| reply to OOLhome actually my reliable source says OOL is now controlled by martians and they are angry that we have stolen all their bandwidth. these are the same martians that have been spamming every e-mail account to ever exist with rabbit porn and other such distasteful material.
or maybe the loch ness monster broke into OOL's secret underground lair in scotland and has disrupted OOL's mainframe.
wait, a new report coming in that says bob saget's gigantic nose has disrupted satellite communication, resulting in a total system failure at OOL.
who needs proof? i swear its true!! -- 2.4C-Abit IS7-2x512 XMS3200-Radeon 9500 (9700 softmod)-SLK900U+92mmTornado |

I download from newsfeeds.com, and I too see the ten minute throttle...
The first clue should be that everyone is reporting the ten minute time-frame, highly suspicious to me...
CV may just be throttling the feeds... |

| Im going off 3 diferent news providers (usenet, newshost and giganews) all the same problem, alhtough I think I may have some more knowledge, when I try more then 4 connections I get throttled down however, if I maintain 4 connections or less, I hover around 5 Mbit.
P.S. I Tried diferent connections from multiple servers at the same time, the 5th connection throttled me down, can anyone else try this and see of maybe its just me |
