| Question for DSL Tech
I just upgraded from 1.5/256 to 3.0/512. I had to call the support center to finish the upload speed, it had been set to 384, in the process of this, the tech was looking at the download linedata and noticed a couple of items that seemed out of place. I have listed the results the linedata scan below.
linedata near 1.5/256 3.0/512
capacity occupation 57% 100% noise margin downstream 15.5db 6.5db output power upstream 16 dbm 17 dbm attenuation downstream 44 db 44.5 db
The modem sync's up anywhere between 3300-3400, the technician looked at the eng report on the line when it was first installed and it indicated it was good up to 5.1 mb, so he put in a service call to have the line checked.
The line tech came out to my house and checked the line at my computer, it connected at 3500, he then said there was nothing else he could do,if I wanted any more assistance I would have to call the support center back, and get a dsl tech to check things.
I called the support center back and the technician checked things from his end and said everything was in spec.
My questions are about the 100% occupation and the 6.5db noise margin, the first tech said they like to see an 80% occupation and 10-15 db noise margin. Are these two measurements in spec or should I try to get them a little better.
I have run speed tests to sprints servers and get 2.7 to 2.9 mb, I have run the tests at the same time of the day so as to try to get a more accurate test. I would not think there would be 200kb difference between tests. The speed is acceptable at this point, my concern is the line is marginal at this point and I have no margin for error.
As far as I can tell I am about 12-13k feet from the CO.
I would appreciate any info you might have about this, if this is the best I can get, I will let the matter drop, if you think the situation can be improved I will push Sprint a little harder. |

| It sounds like you are on the outter edge to obtain 3meg service. Your service will probably fluctuate with the noise. We usually dispatch on on noise levels under 6db. Do you have a splitter on your line or are you using filters? The best way to improve your stats is to improve the line quality. You may benefit from a homerun install of your dsl line (basically all new wiring from the NID to right to your DSL jack) Other than that there is not a whole lot else can be done. I dont know what kind of home you live in (are your lines underground or do you have a pole drop) A lot of times with pole drops, you can have a flat pair of cable coming into the home which can cause problems. Let me know!

| Thanks for the info, there is a splitter installed at the NID as well as cat 5 run from the NID to the modem, all wiring is underground, I also took the modem outside to the NID and checked it there, just to eliminate the inside wiring.
It would appear, as you suggested, I am at the limit for 3 meg service, so I will just let it ride for now and hope the line does not deteriorate any time soon.
Thanks for you help. |

| Keep watching it then. If you continue to have problems then a tech may be able to do some more out at the remote. The flip side is they may disqualify for you for 3meg if they feel nothing else can be done. We are looking to get new provisioning speeds for customers who may be just a little too far for 3meg but can get like 2.5meg or 2meg. So that may be an option in the near future as well.
