I think...

it was a misconfiguration issue. Nothing more.

HOWEVER...

I disagree with some of the thoughts here. The Bells trying to charge $6-$10 for JUST Caller ID is an outrage when VoIP providers throw it in for free. Voicemail...free. Call Waiting ID...free.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Bells are (or started) blocking access to these providers so they can't take share in the future. It's really only a matter of time. In fact, as soon as that one last channel goes into the "Basic" tier of my cable service, Cox is going to lose about $60 a month from me, because VoIP and dish are where I'm going.
