Re: ASW Vendors in La-La Land

well, it went from 634 to 631 spyware "families"--the categories that Spybot and Microsoft Antispyware display. Presumably, one of those is WhenU, but what about the other 3?

More Spyware Checked Bigger File, Less Spyware checked smaller file with each update file?

So lets do some math

SE1R20 25.11.2004 File size : 401144 Bytes
SE1R21 03.12.2004 File size : 407954 Bytes

Difference: + 6,810 bytes

SE1R21 03.12.2004 File size : 407954 Bytes
SE1R22 13.12.2004 File size : 412583 Bytes

Difference: + 4,629 bytes

SE1R22 13.12.2004 File size : 412583 Bytes
SE1R23 16.12.2004 File size : 418765 Bytes

Difference: + 6,182 bytes

SE1R23 16.12.2004 File size : 418765 Bytes
SE1R24 29.12.2004 File size : 416382 Bytes

Difference: - 2,383 bytes Did some SPYWARE go AWAY?

SE1R24 29.12.2004 File size : 416382 Bytes
SE1R25 11.01.2005 File size : 412196 Bytes

Difference: - 4,186 bytes Did some SPYWARE go AWAY?

SE1R25 11.01.2005 File size : 412196 Bytes
SE1R26 25.01.2005 File size : 413418 Bytes

Difference: + 1,222 bytes

SE1R26 25.01.2005 File size : 413418 Bytes
SE1R27 05.02.2005 File size : 410347 Bytes

Difference: - 3,071 bytes Did some SPYWARE go AWAY?

SE1R23 16.12.2004 File size : 418765 Bytes (Largest)
SE1R27 05.02.2005 File size : 410347 Bytes (Current)

Difference: - 8,418 bytes 12/16/04 - 02/05/05

That's a total difference of near MINUS 2 percent of the total file size, seems to me there may be MUCH MORE missing than just WhenU.

if ad-aware does lose it's user trust with it. microsoft will once again be a dominating monopoly once more.

This is quite interesting. I've always reccomended at least 2 programs, spybot and ad-aware. I'm going to join the rest of you guys and wait for lavasoft's explaination before I make a final decision on ad-aware.

Very sad... Very Very Sad.. to see an anti spyware program like this, that was recommended over and over again in the past, on this forum, on Tech TV, Kim Komando's radio show, and other numerous places, now TOTALLY trash it's reputation and sleep with the enemy.. Okay, I guess I'm glad for a couple of things ... Excuse me, Lavasoft, you HAVE A LOT OF NERVE in teling us "WhenU" isn't spyware...

1. Eric Howes... Bless you..
2. Patrick Kolla...
3. Spysweeper, McAfee Antispyware, and the remaining other antispyware programs that heven't "prostituted" themselves, at least not yet... Don't forget, Norton also detects WhenU...
4. This DSLReports Forum... and the members who participate.

Thanks,

Jim

So long Lavasoft/Adaware. It was nice knowing you. You have been deleted from my system, and I checked my registry and cleaned out any keys that mentioned you.

Hold on. He or she seems to have corrected the wording there already.

Also, as far as giving the benefit of the doubt, it's certainly likely that a more efficient storage or compression method can account for the reduced file sizes.

What can't be accounted for, of course, are all the false negatives.

That Lavasoft forums thread is curiously short too.

So it's a day later and STILL no word from Lavasoft explaining anything.

This does NOT bode well, folks.

I may have to remove the strikethroughs from my earlier post.

Yes, it is sad.
Thanks for your opinion on McAfee antispyware. I use their virus scanner and firewall but for some reason never even thought of their antispyware. I'll have to look into that.

And Thank you Eric for your untiring effort and work to keep us all aware. It is truly appreciated.

I have used Lavasoft Ad-Aware for several years now, and I must say that I am extremely disapointed to hear about all of this. One of the reasons that I have stuck with Ad-Aware is that I like the feeling of having a consistant, reliable, and trustworthy anti-spyware program. When you are trying to maintain the integrity of a home network with 6 computers, it can be a hassle to change anti-virus or anti-spyware programs. Thank you Eric for keeping us updated.

If you run Spybot S&D with tea timer, you can tell it deny access and it will never install WhenUsave. I'm shocked that Ad-aware would do this, but its all about the money, not us users.

News from Lavasoft-Forum. Does anybody know what that means?

Hi all,

First and foremost, Lavasoft does not have collaborations with any company that has or will have content detected by Ad-Aware. WhenU was indeed removed from our database by research in the last definition file. This was due to WhenU not scoring more than 2 TAC points at the time. In case it turns out that the removal was incorrect, WhenU will naturally be reintroduced to the database.

Thanks Chris Fry

I think this response begs this question: What changed? WhenU or Lavasofts scoring matrix?

Here's what I find on TAC:

Guess we'd need to test this with a different bundle than the BearShare one...

Couple of questions: first, anybody got a quick pointer to something else that bundles WhenU besides BearShare?

And second, if this "TAC score" is based on how WhenU is bundled with BearShare, does Ad-Aware detect and indicate this in the software?

(Actually, I guess we'd have to find out from Lavasoft if their change is based on the BearShare installer or some other change in WhenU.)

Thanks,

Philip Sloss

Philip:

A few other programs that have been known to bundle WhenU:

Radlight
»www.radlight.net/

Some of the screensavers & wallpapers here:

Some of the BlueHavenMedia apps here:

PlayMiniGolf
»www.playminigolf.com/

Note that I haven't checked some of the above in a couple of months, so WhenU may no longer be bundled with some of the above. Worth a check, though.

Best,

Thanks, Eric.

And thanks for the TAC search link, DSL_Steve...unfortunately, I can't get it to find WhenU. Anybody else try it?

I was able to get it to hit on "coolweb" and "Claria" but not "when", "whenu", or "whenusave"
