For really free, fire up Terminal and type ftp at the prompt.

If you use FireFox load the FireFTP extension.

Transmit by Panic isn't free but it's a modest fee and it's the best FTP app I've seen for OS X... RBrowser's OK, too... but not as polished.

If I'm not using Fugu for my sftp purposes, I use ncftp (non-gui ftp with a lot of useful options).

Hmm, both seem to have newer version from what I currently have. Must be time to test

I'll second Cyber Duck.. I picked it up today for other reasons, and it beats the crap out of any Windows FTP client I ever used. After minutes of using it I loved it.. and ya can't beat free.

How about the finder?

Look in the menu, click on Go>Connect To Server

It's not the fastest but it works and is easy to use.

I've been using Captain FTP. It's not free, but I find it very easy to use.

It's so crippled! It doesn't even let you upload...

I noticed the Finder used to choke or stall on large downloads too. That might be fixed since 10.3, but I haven't bothered to try that way lately.

RBrowser is pretty good.
