| Setting up wireless between 2 houses
My neighbour and I are trying to setup wireless connection between our 2 houses which are less than 100m(~300ft) apart. Even though the houses can have a LoS, the wireless equipment does not due to its placement in each house.
We currently have:
SpeedStream 6300 Wireless DSL Router Linksys WRT54GS Router (running Alchemy-6.0-RC6), I can get regular WRT54G if it is better. Linksys WMP54G PCI Card
We're having a heck of a time trying to get the stuff to work, even if we move the stuff to the closest walls and changing the power on the WRT54GS to max(251mw), tried various things but it does not work. Net Stumbler does pickup the Linksys, but signal is so weak that connection can not be made. I am looking for some directional antenna suggestions that does not cost an arm and leg or can be home made. I also remember seeing this red cylindrical directional antenna somewhere that promised a 20dBi gain and was cheap, it also came with its own tripod. I no longer remember the website.
I am very new to this, so any help will be very much appreciated. -- An ISO 14000 registered service provider. |

| reply to Doci Your current equipment may not be LOS, and furthermore trying to do so would interrup the wifi service WITHIN the houses. Instead get two ethernet adaptor bridges, stick them in facing windows with two low cost directional patch panel antennas. One bridge would be wired back to the originating router, the other to the network in the other house. -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! "Albert Collins". Leave your troubles at the door! | reply to Doci We're currently trying parabolic reflector antennas between the Linksys WRT54GS in client mode & the SS6300. Going see what kind of improvement it gets. Also, I read that omni devices radiate on horizontal plane? Since all our devices are omni, would it make a negative impact if our equipment in both houses were not at a level? Also, loss of wireless in my house is non issue, since I don't have anything wifi capable at the moment. -- An ISO 14000 registered service provider. |
