I hope you realize that BUD (Big Ugly Dish) is still commonly used. They were never intended for the home market. You have to realize with Cable there getting their content from satellite as well but then compress it and that weakens the signal even more going through miles of "cable line" and then eventually to coaxial. Digital Broadcast Satellite providers are just as guilty. The signal is broadcasted from a studio to space, the DBS gets their signal and then REBROADCASTS it compressed and the customers get their content from the dish, the only different is it's completely digital unlike "digital cable". I myself use DISH and find them much better than cox and cheaper.
Now before you flame about "Big Ugly Dishes" believe me they have use. For one back in the day and even today you were able to get channels for free because you didn't have a "provider". Most had a motor to change to different satellites and get their programs. Today you can still get free programming, some programs charge and you aren't forced to order a subscription. There are pros and cons about both. I'll give you some about BUD's. Your getting the signal STRAIGHT from the source, it's not compressed at all therefore you don't get all those nasty artifacts or anything. While not as popular as DBS or digital cable, look around rural areas and smaller suburbs, you will find plenty of people with them still and they have plenty of good use.
By the way the correct term of a BUD is C-Band satellite/KU |

But as real Telco's and ICLEC's offer up faster and faster bandwidth (read this as Fiber) and then offer up video over the IP... the cable co's are destined to become piles o'dust at some point in time..likely sooner than later |

Big ugly dish in your yard ?
Scary those are so 70's/80's.
Small dish side of my house you can't even see unless you are in my yard and looking behind my chimney under the eve and overhang. (No rain between dish and lnb and I never get the problems cable co's claim)
Dishnetwork gives me music channels in mono (old stuff) Stereo and even sirius radio for nadda added to my subscription.
Also channels Wise
180 channels $48 plus sirius radio those are close to 45 channels. No hbo or anything.
$83 and I get 230 channels as well as the sirius channels. And I get hdtv content also. Which is pretty neat considering. Plus no crappy looking VOD or digital cable with pixelation all over the place. (got dvd's for VOD not to far of a walk to blockbuster from here). It's all area dependent.
The part you got "flamed" about was the fact you didn't read the article fully and failed to see the rate increases seen yearly by many with cable. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |

Don't flame me for not doing research on the subject. I am just making comparisons. Cable tv provides more channels if you look at direct tvs website and got the TOTAL CHOICE PREMIER with locals pack you are looking at getting 205 channels for 87$ compared to my local tv provider which provides 250 channels for 83$ Direct tv has 30 premium channels dish has 31. Cox has 45 total premium stations . Which to you sounds like a better value 250 channels for 83$ or 205 for 87 . My cable provider provides 45 music choice channels direct tv only does 30. I forgot to mention entertainment on demand. Which adds 4 more premium channels to the list of 45. I can fast forward rewind put movies on pause watch them when I want. I can watch premium stations programming on my own time . I can also get my services bundled together and save even more money. With cable you get more for your money and local service. If I have a problem with a bill or a remote I can walk into a front counter which is just down the street from me. You can not do that with dtv. I can watch local high school football and basketball games on the cox channel. Best of all I do not have a big ugly dish in my yard. |

Yea satelite companies raise their rates but you don't see them raising their rates in a outrageous manner like cable companies do. According to the facts in this article, cable companies raise their rates higher in places where they don't have competition. Satelite only raises prices because it has to and it is still cheaper then cable. Cable companies raises rates because they want to. That is the difference. |

RTFA, the reason they are looking at cable is it's a yearly occurrence. Satellite companies are not raising rates as frequently. I believe in 10 to 12 years Directv has raised rates 3 times total and Dishnetworks the same.
In short cable 1 to 2 times a year increases. Satellite every 3 to 4 years an increase.
Wonder when people will actually read a bit more into the subjects before they post. Like I dunno perhaps doing a bit of researching about the subject. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |

I hate hearing just about when cable increases rates. Cable offers more channels . No one says anything when Satellite TV increases your rates. »www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c···business
And guess who Satellite tv companies are blaiming for the rate increase. You guessed sports channels . I think the fcc should look at the likes of Espn and Fox Sports before trying to regulate Cable and Satellite. |
