| Which routers best for FiOS?
I have a few questions about the D-Link routers used for Verizon's FiOS service:
1) Do you have to use them to get the maximum throughput up and down?
2) Can you get the maximum throughput with your existing router (I'm using the Linksys 4-port model BEFSR41 v.3)?
3) Is there a difference between the retail versions of the D-Link routers and units provided by Verizon? If so what?
4) Is Verizon planning on switching to, or supporting, different brands going forward?
5) When will Bronx residents get FiOS?

| I believe the BEFSR41v3 only has a 10MB WAN port. Thus if you were to order the 15MB/2MB package, you'd never get full speeds.
As far as if you have to use their router, I'm not sure. There were some people a few months back talking about trying to use WRT54G/WRT54GS's but were running into problems.

The policy right now is that you have to use their routers (which they provide for free).
I have heard that their routers have a proprietary Verizon firmware to optimize things.
The free wired router is the DLink 4 port DI 604 while the wireless router, which you have to pay $65 for is the DI 624.
I'm confident these routers will work quite well. I was particularly pleased to learn that both routers are approved for XBox Live compatibility, which was a minor issue for me with my old Netgear RT314.
I opted for the free wired router (DI 604), for wirelss connectivity I plan to add my Microsoft MN 700 wirelss router as a wireless base station by turning off DHCP.
BTW, I might add that when I recently retired my RT314 in favor of the MN 700 (which I had been using as a base station) I was amazed at the improvements in router functionality in the past 5 years or so. Faster speeds, vastly better port management. |

| something you can do is get an old pc and turn it into a firewall/router with a 10/100 nic..:0 I run Astaro here. Hopefully somtimes in the new few years we can get FIOS..I will then just hook right into my firewall machine.

We're talking $5-10/month to run some systems 24X7. Here in New Jersey I used to run 6 computers 24X7, when I stopped running them the price of the electricity dropped $40/month. So in the long run you'd be better off just getting a router, it is a lot more energy efficient. Just make sure you get one with a 100MBIT WAN port. Personally myself, I'll just use Verizon's DLINK router. It works, that's all that matters to me. If I was forced to buy one I wouldn't care. That is how hyped up I am about FIOS, I'd drop $1,000 for it right now.

Thanks in advance. 1) No you don't, but make sure you get a 100mbit WAN router. Your Linksys will NOT work with the 15/2 package.
2) NO
3) Same router, just a Verizon propriety firmware that is optimized for FIOS and FIOS custom support.
4) No one knows. They probably have a contract with D-Link and D-Link is providing them the cheapest routers. I doubt they will officially "support" any other router anytime soon.
5) Don't know. I'd venture to say within 3 years. Definitely not this year.

The BEFSR41 does have a 10/100 WAN port. The older models sported the 10Mbps WAN port. |

Thanks for your answers. I'll use the D-Link router Verizon provides along with my 8-port Linksys switch. I figure if the router works then it doesn't matter. Word through the grapevine is that the Bronx maybe FiOS-ready by year's end or early 2006. If that's the case then I say hell yeah, sign me up now! |

Hey Slogun1, which package did you get? What'd your install entail? I'm very curious since I live in a brownstone here in the Boogie Down. My section of Morris Avenue is nothing but brownstones between Tremont Avenue and E. 179th Street. Beyond that it's a schizophrenic mix of private homes and apartment buildings (with some brownstone-looking pads thrown in). |

I would go ahead and get the wired router at a minimum since it won't cost you anything. If you need support you can always fall back to it. I'm sure there are many possible configs that will work, but it seems Verizon is rolling out a standard package to minimize support cost. |

If i was using a p-4 or ahtlonxp it would be a concern. However the Astaro also gives many many things a router canot. The small small amount of extra electricity is well worth the extra security i gain.

Your linux router is fine..as a matter of fact it is much more flexible and adaptable then the d-links. The dlinks are notorius for having stability issues anwyas.
