Ad-aware, Norton.... makes no difference! The best thing to use is: netstat -a to see what's running on what port and what it talks to, there's also a nice little utility called openports, tells ya what .exe is sitting on what port. Ethereal is also yet another good tool. Clean out the c:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Run MSconfig and see what starts when the machine is booting up, anything that looks funky, i.e. hjdfhgkjysg, is definitely not supposed to be there. There should be no services running out of c:\windows\system\ (i.e. lsass.exe), or c:\windows. Also, turn off System Restore.
I know, it's a lot of manual work, but I haven't had any issues in years! no pop-ups at all! ( I guess the fact that I also filter all inbound AND OUTBOUND traffic helps). |
